Podcaster Joe Rogan criticized wealth tax policies in Democrat-led states during a recent discussion with comedian Theo Von, arguing that such measures are driving residents and businesses out while failing to address underlying financial management issues.
Rogan pointed to states like Massachusetts and New York as examples of what he described as a growing trend of population and business losses tied to higher tax burdens on high earners.
“Look how many people are fucking moving out of all these states that are trying to impose wealth taxes. They’re trying to steal money from the people that are the most successful,” Rogan said.

He referenced reporting about Massachusetts, stating that the state has experienced financial losses as individuals and businesses relocate.
“I was reading something about Massachusetts and how much this lady was reporting about how much Massachusetts is lost from that because people leave the state, their businesses leave the state,” Rogan said.
Rogan also pointed to New York, where he said officials are attempting to reverse the trend of outmigration. He referenced Gov. Kathy Hochul and efforts to encourage residents to return.
“New York is having the same problem like Kathy Hochul lady, you know, now she’s asking people I don’t know how to say her name. I don’t care,” Rogan said.

Theo Von responded, “Yeah, get a better name.”
Rogan continued, “Who cares what her name is?”
Von added, “Yeah. I don’t.”
Rogan said New York officials are now attempting outreach efforts aimed at individuals who have relocated to lower-tax states.
“She’s asking people to go to Palm Beach and tell people to come back to New York now, because we’re losing tax base. Like, come on, of course, you’re losing tax base,” Rogan said.
He argued that taxing higher earners more heavily does not address broader fiscal issues and instead encourages departures.
“You can’t just arbitrarily decide that because someone makes more money, they deserve to give you more money. And then what have you done with the money you have?” Rogan said.
Von responded, “That’s the best part.”
Rogan said the problem lies in how funds are managed, claiming that waste and fraud remain unaddressed.
“Oh, a shit ton of waste and fraud. And have you corrected any of that? No. So your solution is, what more money? Yeah, okay, f**k all the way off. Of course, these people are gonna leave you’re a bunch of incompetent stooges, and you’re in charge of all the money in the state, and that’s dumb,” Rogan said.
He also pointed to companies that have relocated operations from California, citing policy and cost concerns as factors.
“And that’s why Chevron moved out of California, and Tesla moved out of California, and In-N-Out Burger moved out of California,” Rogan said.
Von noted that individuals are also leaving the state, drawing a parallel between businesses and residents.
“We moved out. We moved out of California. We’re not companies, but we’re people,” Von said.
Rogan responded by suggesting individuals function similarly to small businesses when making relocation decisions.
“We might as well be companies. We’re small companies, but it’s like, you can’t just say we’re gonna take more money and that’ll fix it,” Rogan said.
