The media picked the wrong fights in the last few months, and the cameras caught every second of it.
Cable news panels have spent years telling audiences what matters and what does not. These five moments show exactly what happened when the framing collapsed in real time.
1. CNN Hosts Ignored Somali Day Care Fraud Allegations And Went After Man Who Reported Them
Independent journalist Nick Shirley posted a 42-minute video visiting Somali-run day care centers in Minnesota accused of defrauding the state out of millions of dollars. CNN’s panel responded by targeting Shirley instead of the story.
Former MSNBC host Tiffany Cross and Democratic strategist Maria Cardona spent over two and a half minutes on CNN NewsNight trying to discredit Shirley while host Abby Phillip dismissed his reporting as “performative.” Cross skipped over the fraud allegations entirely and went after Shirley’s credentials.
WATCH:
“Who is he? Like who gave this guy license to go around and say, ‘I couldn’t get in the daycare centers? The doors were locked.’ Like nobody should be able to walk into a daycare center because the doors are locked. These random vigilante justice — something that people in this country know a lot about — these random vigilante justice seekers who ordained themselves like some sort of law enforcement expert, like he’s a random YouTuber,” Cross said.
Cardona escalated the attack and reframed Shirley’s journalism as a physical threat to the Somali community. “It’s not just racist and xenophobic. It’s actually dangerous. Because what Donald Trump is doing in targeting this community, it’s putting American citizens in danger, because it is putting a target on their back,” Cardona said.
Neither panelist addressed the underlying fraud. The panel attacked the messenger and let the story walk out the door.
2. CNN Panel’s Behavior Proves Kevin O’Leary Right
“Shark Tank” star Kevin O’Leary joined a CNN NewsNight panel debating the FBI’s seizure of over 700 boxes of election records from Fulton County, Georgia. Host Abby Phillip handed O’Leary the final word, and he did not waste it.
“My last word is, you’re all nuts,” O’Leary said.

The panel erupted. Phillip talked over him, Cari Champion reacted with indignation, and Ana Navarro went straight for condescension. (RELATED: Legacy Media In Panic Mode Over Russiagate’s Implosion)
“Guys, guys, please. We’ve got to keep it together here, OK? Honestly, there’s a way to talk about these things. If you don’t have anything to say, just say that, and I won’t come to you next time,” Phillip said, while Navarro added, “You don’t have basic information, Kevin.”
3. CNN Panelist Talks Over Conservative Podcaster Citing CDC’s Own COVID Failures
The House Oversight Committee released its final report in December 2024 finding that the CDC allowed the American Federation of Teachers to shape school reopening guidance and push inaccurate claims about masking and vaccines. Conservative podcaster Ben Ferguson raised that documented record on CNN NewsNight.
Dr. Chris T. Pernell of the NAACP Center for Health Equity responded by cutting him off repeatedly.
WATCH:
“Two things. One, they’re not outlawed. That’s good. The parents are going to decide. Two, there’s a cause and effect, and the CDC lied to us about COVID, and they lied a lot. They lied about masks in schools,” Ferguson said, with Pernell interrupting by repeatedly saying, “Not true.”
“They lied about distancing. They lied about the efficiency or the effectiveness of the Covid-19 vaccine,” Ferguson continued, with Pernell again saying, “Not true.”
4. CNN Panel Defends Release Of A Man With 14 Prior Convictions Who Killed Ukrainian Refugee
DeCarlos Brown carried 14 prior convictions and a schizophrenia diagnosis when a North Carolina magistrate judge released him without bail and handed him a written promise to appear in court. Brown’s own mother refused to let him stay with her because of his violent behavior. Brown then killed a Ukrainian refugee in Charlotte, N.C.
On CNN NewsNight, National Review columnist Caroline Downey argued Brown’s history made him a permanent danger who belonged in an institution. The panel attacked her for saying it.
WATCH:
“He served time for his violent offenses in the past,” host Abby Phillip said.
“Not for his schizophrenia,” Downey replied. “I’m saying that was compounding this entire issue, the fact that he lashed out violently on that train.”
Former Clinton White House aide Keith Boykin treated institutionalization as an outrage rather than an option.
“You actually said that. I can’t believe you actually said that somebody should be locked away in jail forever for schizophrenia. Did you really say that?” Boykin asked. (RELATED: ‘She’s F**king Bleeding’: 911 Audio From Horrific Charlotte Train Stabbing Of Iryna Zarutska Released)
Downey held her position and turned the question around. “You’re saying that this man should have been roaming the streets. Is that your position?” she asked. The panel never answered.
5. Jim Acosta Compares CNN Ownership Change To Russia, China, And North Korea
When Paramount Skydance outbid Netflix to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of CNN, former CNN host Jim Acosta took to his show and compared the prospect of conservative-friendly ownership to authoritarian state media across four countries.
“[W]e may have a scenario in this country where a MAGA-friendly corporation, a Trumpy corporation, Oracle, will control both CBS News and CNN,” Acosta said. “In what world is that normal? How is that happening in America? … I can understand it happening in Russia … Hungary … Turkey … Visit the countries that have state-controlled media … These are not places where you want to live, by and large … These are places you don’t even want to step foot on their soil.”
Acosta pushed further and invoked North Korea and China.
“Do we want the United States of America to become like Russia? … North Korea?” he asked. “Do we want the United States of America to become like China, where you don’t have freedom of thought … political freedom … the ability to read, watch, and absorb the media and information that you want to consume and take in?” (RELATED: CNN Host Claims Biden Admin Never Lost Track Of 300,000 Kids)
“That Donald Trump is the second coming of Abraham Lincoln, or, as he likes to put it out on the campaign trail, that he’s more popular, that he’s a greater president than Abraham Lincoln and George Washington? What a crock of shit,” Acosta said.
