President Trump said Thursday the U.S. will be hearing from Moscow this week on his administration’s ceasefire proposal for Ukraine and Russia.
“We’re going to be hearing from them … very shortly actually, and we’ll see,” Mr. Trump said, seated beside Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in the Oval Office. “We want the death and the killing to stop.”
Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff were meeting with Ukrainian and European officials Thursday at a summit in Paris to discuss Ukraine. Mr. Trump and his team have been pushing Russia to agree to a ceasefire without success.
Mr. Trump said he doesn’t blame Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for the war with Russia, which contradicts previous statements he has made.
“I don’t hold Zelenskyy responsible, but I’m not exactly thrilled with the fact that that war started,” he said. “I’m not happy with him or anybody involved. You can blame the man who was sitting here in this seat, [former President] Biden. He didn’t know what the hell was going on.”
