The public narrative surrounding Kilmar Abrego-Garcia, a previously deported illegal immigrant from El Salvador, took a major hit this week after multiple new revelations undercut claims that he was not affiliated with the violent MS-13 gang.

The story resurfaced after U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) traveled to El Salvador earlier this year, where he met with Abrego-Garcia and criticized the deportation.

Van Hollen and other Democrats framed the deportation as unjust, claiming Abrego-Garcia was wrongfully removed despite being a long-time Maryland resident. However, evidence emerging this week has complicated that narrative.

During a press event at the White House, President Donald Trump indicated that further proof of Abrego-Garcia’s gang affiliation would be released.

He referenced hand tattoos allegedly tied to MS-13 and stated that the symbols clearly reflect his involvement with the organization.

Trump added that Abrego-Garcia’s wife, who is now reportedly trying to cover up those tattoos, previously filed a protective order against him in 2021.

The president said these physical markings directly contradict the claim—echoed by several media outlets and Democratic figures—that Abrego-Garcia was unfairly targeted for deportation.

As reported by federal law enforcement agencies, Abrego-Garcia entered the U.S. illegally in 2011.

A final deportation order was issued against him in 2019.

According to Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), he was identified by the Prince George’s County Police Gang Unit as a known member of MS-13, a transnational criminal gang responsible for numerous violent crimes across the United States.

Additionally, a December 2022 incident involving the Tennessee Highway Patrol raised further red flags.

Officers stopped Abrego-Garcia for speeding and discovered eight passengers in the vehicle—all giving the same address as Abrego-Garcia and carrying no luggage. Authorities suspected a potential human trafficking situation.

Despite these findings, Democrat lawmakers including Van Hollen pushed back against the deportation, prompting public backlash and renewed scrutiny of his trip to El Salvador.

Also present at the White House this week was Patty Morin, the mother of Rachel Morin, a Maryland woman who was raped and murdered in August 2023.

The suspect in that case, police say, is an illegal immigrant from El Salvador.

Morin appeared at the White House press room as a guest of the Trump administration, where she shared her story and called for stricter immigration enforcement.

In light of the new information surrounding Abrego-Garcia—including the protective order filed by his wife—critics of Van Hollen’s involvement have questioned why Democrat leaders continue to defend individuals with documented criminal histories and known gang affiliations.

The Trump administration has pointed to the incident as another example of the need for stronger immigration laws and greater accountability for states and elected officials who resist federal enforcement efforts.

As the White House continues its crackdown on gang-related crime and illegal immigration, the administration says more disclosures are expected in the coming weeks concerning individuals previously shielded from deportation by local jurisdictions or political pressure.

So far, neither Senator Van Hollen nor his office have responded directly to the latest revelations.
