Woman gifts poisoned chocolate eggs to ex’s family for Easter, accused of murder

An alleged revenge plot has left one child dead in Brazil after a woman’s anger for her ex’s new lover went too far.

Jordélia Pereira Barbosa is accused of purchasing Easter candy, specifically chocolate eggs, while in disguise, then spiking them with poison before their delivery to the home of Mirian Lira, according to a report of the incident. A note accompanied the candies, reading: “With love, to Mirian Lira. Happy Easter.”

Lira is reportedly dating Pereira Barbosa’s ex-boyfriend, and authorities believe it is this connection that made her the target of the allegedly tainted treats. The unsuspecting Lira shared the eggs with her children, 7-year-old Luis and 13-year-old Evelyn.

Reports indicate that Luis “immediately” fell violently ill and passed away at the hospital the next day. Meanwhile, Evelyn and Lira are still in the hospital and are said to be in critical condition. The official cause of death for the young boy has not been determined and authorities are testing the remaining confections. Local reports indicate that this isn’t the first time Pereira Barbosa has concocted a plan to target her ex’s new lady. She had previously attempted to get Lira to consume allegedly tainted chocolates during a tasting event at a local supermarket.

Maranhão Civil Police contacted and arrested Pereira Barbosa while she was attempting to flee to her hometown of Santa Inês, also locating receipts said to be related to the purchase of the goods allegedly used in the poisoning. Authorities say that she has admitted to buying the chocolates, but not tampering with them.

Brazilian security official Maurício Martins believes the act was “motivated by revenge and jealousy.”

“There are several indications that clearly point to this woman being the perpetrator of the crime. The police will continue working to strengthen this evidence and present her to the Judiciary to answer for this barbaric crime,” Martins wrote in a statement.
