Former Vice President Al Gore sparked controversy Monday when he drew a comparison between the Trump administration and Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime during a keynote speech at a climate change event in California, as reported by Fox News.
Gore was speaking at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco to launch the city’s Climate Week when he said the Trump administration is “trying to create their own preferred version of reality.”

He referenced post-World War II philosophical assessments of Nazi Germany to bolster his argument.

“I understand very well why it is wrong to compare Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich to any other movement,” Gore said. “It was uniquely evil, full stop. I get it. But there are important lessons from the history of that emergent evil.”
Gore cited the work of German philosopher Theodor Adorno, specifically referencing the idea that the “conversion of all questions of truth into questions of power” was a first step in Germany’s descent.
He quoted Adorno again, saying the Nazis “attacked the very heart of the distinction between true and false.”
He then directly applied the quote to the Trump administration, stating:
“The Trump administration is insisting on trying to create their own preferred version of reality.”

Gore continued his speech by criticizing what he claimed were the Trump administration’s positions on climate policy, listing several examples.

“They say the climate crisis is a hoax invented by the Chinese to destroy American manufacturing. They say coal is clean. They say wind turbines cause cancer. They say sea-level rise just creates more beachfront property.”
He concluded by arguing, “We have to deal with the democracy crisis in order to solve the climate crisis.”

This is not the first time comparisons between Donald Trump and authoritarian leaders have surfaced.
During the 2024 presidential campaign, several of Trump’s political opponents and multiple left-leaning media outlets made similar comparisons, invoking the names of Hitler and other fascist figures.
The Trump administration has routinely denied such characterizations, defending its climate policies as grounded in economic and national interest considerations.
Fox News Digital reached out to Gore’s representatives for comment on his remarks. No response had been received at the time of publication.
