Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff joined the small crowd of Democratic lawmakers calling for President Trump to be impeached.
When pressed by audience members at a town hall Friday in Cobb County, Georgia, about why Democrats aren’t doing enough to remove Mr. Trump from office, Mr. Ossoff said the president’s conduct in his first 100 days in office “has already exceeded any prior standard for impeachment by the United States House of Representatives.”
“I mean, I saw just 48 hours ago, he is granting audiences to people who buy his meme coin,” Mr. Ossoff said. “When the sitting president of the United States is selling access for what are effectively payments directly to him, there is no question that that rises to the level of an impeachable offense.”
Democrats in the early months of Mr. Trump’s second term haven’t shown the same desire to impeach as they did when he first came to Washington in 2017. Still, a growing number of Democratic lawmakers have begun to publicly call for the president’s removal.
Mr. Trump is the first president to be impeached twice: first for efforts to withhold security assistance money from Ukraine in 2019, then for the events surrounding the 2020 election and certification of the results.
While impeachment loomed large during his first term, the appetite has vastly diminished, at least publicly. Still, the specter of impeachment has not vanished.
Along with Mr. Ossoff is Rep. Al Green, Texas Democrat, who earlier this year declared he was drafting and ready to file articles of impeachment against the president. Mr. Green was the first lawmaker to make such a move during Mr. Trump’s first term.
Rep. Shri Thanedar, Michigan Democrat, also joined the ouster push, posting on X that he would “fully support” impeaching Mr. Trump for not abiding by a Supreme Court ruling.
The Washington Times reached out to the White House for comment.
Mr. Ossoff’s remarks came following prodding from audience members, with one attendee demanding that he “do more. We need [Mr. Trump] impeached, we need him removed.”
While Mr. Ossoff said he “strongly agreed,” he noted the reality of the matter: Republicans control the House, which is responsible for drafting articles of impeachment. Any attempt by Democrats to impeach the president would likely be stifled quickly.
“The only way to achieve what you want to achieve is to have a majority in the United States House of Representatives,” the senator said. “And believe me, I’m working on it every single day, every single day.”
Mr. Ossoff is up for reelection in the 2026 midterm and is one of the most vulnerable Democrats running in the upcoming cycle.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee, the Senate GOP’s campaign arm, fired back at the lawmaker for his desire to impeach.
“DISGUSTING: Of course, Senator Jon [Ossoff] wants to overturn the will of Georgia voters who just elected President Trump,” the organization said on X.
