Last week Guido pointed out that internet regulator Ofcom had so far failed to create its promised “Advisory Committee on Disinformation and Misinformation” as required by the 2023 Online Safety Act. Six months after announcing the committee Ofcom has today finally put it together…

The panel, whose role is to “provide advice to Ofcom about specific areas of our work relevant to misinformation and disinformation” will meet on 16 May and is made up of five members on three-year terms:

  • Jeffrey Howard: UCL political philosophy professor who said Boris was “morally blameworthy for inciting violence” against MPs because he used the words “surrender” and “betrayal” in political discourse. God forbid…
  • Elisabeth Costa. Innovation chief at consultancy BIT, longtime campaigner for online safety regulation.
  • Will Moy. Former Full Fact chief known best to co-conspirators for hand wringing about the Tories’ press team renaming their twitter account during the 2019 election.
  • Mark Scott: Former Politico and New York Times reporter who has previously campaigned for the online safety act to be even harsher.
  • Devika Shanker-Grandpierre: Panel member for the EU’s “Knowledge Hub on Prevention of Radicalisation.

The committee is chaired by Lord Allan and will provide advice as sought by Ofcom on the execution of internet regulation. Expect it to advise the regulator to go further and faster in locking down online freedoms…
