Scott Stringer Rips Andrew Cuomo for Failing Jewish Community on Antisemitism Fight

Mayoral candidate Scott Stringer criticized former Governor Andrew Cuomo on Sunday, accusing him of misleading the Jewish community by creating an antisemitism advocacy group that has been largely inactive, as reported by The New York Post.

Speaking at the West Side Institutional Synagogue, Stringer said that Cuomo’s group, “Never Again, NOW!,” was promised to be a major force in fighting antisemitism but instead served as a platform to boost Cuomo’s political comeback.

“He actually showed up in people’s living rooms and promised to set up an organization that would run commercials, host symposiums and – with money raised from the Jewish donor community – join the fight against rising antisemitism,” Stringer said.

“But he never lifted a finger. There were no commercials. Nothing. This organization was a vehicle for his mayor’s race – and everybody knows it.”

Stringer, a former New York City comptroller and Manhattan borough president, delivered his remarks days after Cuomo himself addressed the same congregation.

Cuomo had accused his Democratic primary opponents of either condoning antisemitism or failing to condemn it.

Stringer responded by saying, “He knew not to call me out. That would have been a mistake.” He went on to criticize Cuomo for what he called “pitiful” attempts to divide the city and the Jewish community.

Stringer also criticized Cuomo for his response following the October 7, 2023 Hamas terror attacks on Israel, which resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 people and hundreds of hostages.

“He didn’t tell you that he came to this community in our darkest moment, during our hour of need – after more than 1,200 people were murdered by the terrorist organization Hamas, with hundreds of hostages held in Gaza – and he lied to us. He sold us all a bill of goods in our darkest moment, during our hour of need … he thinks he’s getting one over on us. But we know better.”

Quoting the Talmud, Stringer warned congregants to be cautious about political leaders, saying:

“Be careful about the government, as they approach a man only when they need him. They seem like good friends in good times, but they don’t stay for him in time of his trouble.”

While Cuomo’s “Never Again, NOW!” group did release a video ad attacking Hamas in July 2024, the ad received little airtime, according to reports from The New York Times.

Cuomo maintains a strong lead in polling ahead of the June 24 Democratic primary, while Stringer is polling in the single digits.

Cuomo’s campaign has faced attacks regarding his resignation as governor in 2021 amid sexual misconduct allegations, which he denies, and for his handling of COVID-19, particularly a controversial order involving nursing homes.

In response to Stringer’s remarks, Cuomo’s campaign released a statement from Assemblyman Sam Berger.

“Governor Cuomo has shown his support for the Jewish community with action, not just words. Scott Stringer played footsie with the anti-Israel, anti-democratic DSA and their allies who won’t condemn hate,” Berger said.

The Cuomo campaign also highlighted several actions taken during Cuomo’s tenure as governor, including signing an executive order against companies participating in the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel, increasing penalties for hate crimes, securing funds for security upgrades at Jewish institutions, and leading a solidarity trip to Israel in 2014.

Separately, while speaking at Salem Missionary Baptist Church in Brooklyn earlier Sunday, Cuomo defended his leadership during the pandemic, telling congregants, “We beat COVID and saved lives.”
