Home secretary Yvette Cooper was wheeled out for the media round this morning, the day after fresh figures revealed a record-breaking 10,250 small boat migrants crossed the Channel this year so far. Over 40% higher than the figure for this time last year…

Nick Robinson pressed Cooper on Labour’s increasingly hollow ‘smash the gangs’ slogan – she blamed the weather:

“There’s a mix of different things that we need to do obviously. The criminal smuggler gangs are also taking advantage of the very high numbers of calm weather days [which have] been much higher than previous years. The reason that we’re ending up with that border security being affected by the weather is because the way in which these gangs have taken root.”

This isn’t the first time Cooper has pointed skyward to explain away the migrant crisis, blaming a surge in ‘red days’ (calm sea and weather condition) in March and last December for the spike in crossings. Meanwhile, Starmer is doing the rounds boasting about deporting 24,000 illegal migrants since Labour took over – a number that doesn’t even scratch the surface compared to how many are arriving. Labour policy priorities might need another emergency reset…
