Republicans are not seeing eye-to-eye on a proposal that would establish a new $20 fee.
House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chair Sam Graves (R-Missouri) revealed his committee’s plan to establish an additional passenger car fee that he says would pave the way for the end of the gas tax currently in place. That particular tax has been credited with funding transportation and infrastructure projects since its inception in the 1930s, but for now, the small fee on most gas-powered passenger cars would be additive.
This proposal is part of a larger GOP bill that is set for a Wednesday markup, but not everyone in the party is on board with what Graves is suggesting.
“Like, are you out of your fricking mind?” said Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) after reviewing the fee proposal. “Like, the party of limited government is gonna go out and, ‘say we’re gonna have [a car tax]?’”
“You know what I was told? ‘Don’t worry about it. We’ll get rid of it later in the highway bill,’” Roy railed, adding that he was made to understand the fee is “a gimmick to pay for this, so we know that we’re not actually gonna pay for it. That’s how this town works.”
Rep. Eric Burlison (R-Missouri) is vowing to vote “no” on the matter, and says Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pennsylvania) is drafting an amendment to change some of the language of the original proposal, which Burlison called “problematic.”
“We’re trying to get the message to leadership that there’s got to be a better way to find the funds than to create a new national vehicle registration fee,” he explained.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has not spoken in either support or opposition of the proposal, but has reportedly said that it’s not a priority.
X users had plenty to say:
No, no, no! The government never takes a fee or tax. So unless the federal gas tax is removed at the same time-NO

First remove the gas fuel tax. Then we could talk. The answer would still be no.

New car fee? Bro my gas bill already costs more than my car payment!
Next they’ll tax us for breathing polluted air #DeathByAThousandFees— Charlotte (@HuberyL33) April 30, 2025
And this is what they spend their time on…a $20 car tax

Here’s an idea: stop siphoning gas taxes to pay for mother f’ing bike lanes and subway systems! Make those pricks pay! I don’t have a problem with a bike tax to use for bike lanes and you have riders on your subways – they should be forced to cover the costs they incur! NO!
