Kamala Harris made a rare public appearance Wednesday night at a progressive political gala in San Francisco, delivering a speech that included sharp criticism of President Donald Trump and a lengthy aside involving elephants during an earthquake.
Speaking at Emerge’s 20th anniversary celebration, Harris used the occasion to comment on the state of the country under President Trump, whose second term has now passed the 100-day mark.
While she focused heavily on criticizing the administration’s domestic and foreign policies, Harris also included an unexpected anecdote about elephants responding to seismic activity.

“A lot of folks are wondering what’s going to guide us through this moment. How are we all going to figure out how to chart the course,” Harris said to the audience.
“Please allow me, friends, to digress for a moment.”
She continued, “OK, it’s kind of dark in here, but I’m ask[ing] for a show of hands — who saw that video from a couple of weeks ago, the one of the elephants at the San Diego Zoo during the earthquake? Google it if you’ve not seen it.”
Absolutely brutal. We dodged a massive bullet.

Harris described how the elephants, sensing the quake, “got in a circle and stood next to each other to protect the most vulnerable,” calling it “a powerful metaphor” meant to illustrate the importance of unity in the face of fear and division.

The story came in the middle of a speech that otherwise focused on criticizing Trump’s policies and rhetoric.
Harris accused the President of overseeing what she called “the greatest man-made economic crisis in modern presidential history” and warned of what she described as a “wholesale abandonment” of American ideals.
She also referenced Trump’s trade policies, saying, “Americans across the political spectrum are declaring that the president’s reckless tariffs hurt workers and families by raising the cost of everyday essentials, devastate the retirement accounts that people spent a lifetime paying into, and paralyze American businesses, large and small.”
In one portion of the speech, Harris addressed concerns about constitutional norms and the balance of power between branches of government.
“We here know that when the checks and balances ultimately collapse, if Congress fails to do its part, or if the courts fail to do their part, or if both do their part but the president defies them anyway … that is called a constitutional crisis,” Harris said.
“It will eventually impact everyone.”
She also spoke out against the Trump administration’s policies on higher education and immigration.
Harris criticized federal pressure on colleges and universities, calling it “unconstitutional demands that threaten the pursuit of truth and academic independence.”
She also condemned the deportation of alleged MS-13 gang member Kilmar Abrego Garcia to El Salvador, saying, “It is not OK to violate court orders. It is not OK to detain or disappear American citizens or anyone without due process.”
Since her defeat in the 2024 election, Harris has made few public appearances.
Her last high-profile remarks came during the NAACP Image Awards in February.
She had previously stated it was “not in my nature to go quietly into the night,” but she has largely remained out of the spotlight in recent months.
Other Democrats have played more public roles in opposing the Trump administration.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has held multiple town halls and media appearances. Harris acknowledged the efforts of others during her speech, singling out lawmakers such as Cory Booker, Chris Van Hollen, Chris Murphy, Jasmine Crockett, Maxwell Frost, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Bernie Sanders.
She noted that several of them had traveled to El Salvador to visit Garcia.
Harris did not mention any future political plans during the speech, though speculation continues about whether she will run for governor of California in 2026 or seek the presidency again in 2028.
She ended her remarks with a message to her base: “I am not here tonight to offer all the answers, but I am here to say this: things are probably going to get worse before they get better. But we are ready for it. We are not going to scatter.”
“Let’s lock it in,” Harris concluded.
“This country is ours. It doesn’t belong to whoever is in the White House. It belongs to you. It belongs to us.”
