‘There’s No Obama Out There. Who’s Going to Do It?’

A forthcoming book has revealed that advisers to former President Joe Biden privately discussed having him take a cognitive test in early 2024, months before he withdrew from the presidential race, as reported by the New York Post.

The internal debate reportedly took place in February, amid growing concerns over Biden’s mental fitness and public perception.

The book, 2024: How Trump Retook the White House and the Democrats Lost America, is co-authored by reporters Tyler Pager (The New York Times), Josh Dawsey (The Wall Street Journal), and Isaac Arnsdorf (The Washington Post).

It is set for release in July and is one of several retrospectives chronicling the 2024 presidential election.

According to The New York Times, the authors write that Biden’s team was confident he would pass a cognitive assessment, but ultimately chose not to move forward.

Advisers reportedly feared that even suggesting such a test would amplify concerns about the then-81-year-old president’s age and cognitive ability.

At the time, Biden’s longtime physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, stated that his treatment approach would remain separate from any political considerations.

The internal discussions came shortly before Biden’s routine White House physical and in the same month that Special Counsel Robert Hur released a report on Biden’s handling of classified documents.

In that report, Hur referred to Biden as:

“a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”

The book also recounts a tense exchange in 2022 between former Biden Chief of Staff Ron Klain and former Obama adviser David Axelrod.

The call came after Axelrod told the Times that Biden’s age would be a “major issue,” noting that he would be closer to 90 than 80 at the end of a second term.

Klain reportedly challenged Axelrod over the quote, asking why he would stoke doubts about Biden’s ability to run again. “There’s no Obama out there, Axe,” Klain said, according to the book. “Who’s going to do it if he doesn’t do it?”

A separate book by journalist Chris Whipple offers more detail on Biden’s condition in the lead-up to his debate against President Donald Trump in June 2024.

Titled Uncharted: How Trump Beat Biden, Harris, and the Odds in the Wildest Campaign in History, the book describes Biden as “fatigued, befuddled and disengaged” during his early debate preparations.

According to Whipple, Klain—who had left the White House but returned to help with debate prep—was “startled” by Biden’s state during a meeting at the presidential retreat.

Biden was reportedly unaware of key developments in his own campaign and left the session early to sit by the pool.

The Biden campaign has not issued a comment regarding the accounts presented in either book.
