Government Insists Trump Trade Deal Not in Fact ‘Comprehensive’

Trump has posted on Truth Social ahead of the deal with the UK to be announced later today. 3 p.m. our time…

“The agreement with the United Kingdom is a full and comprehensive one that will cement the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom for many years to come. Because of our long time history and allegiance together, it is a great honor to have the United Kingdom as our FIRST announcement. Many other deals, which are in serious stages of negotiation, to follow!”

That seems to have caused a bit of a panic on the UK side. There is friction developing between No 10 and the White House on whether the UK-US trade deal is “full and comprehensive” – Downing Street steered heavily away from that at today’s Lobby briefing of journalists. Early reporting says carve outs on pharmaceuticals for the UK and agriculture for the US have been agreed. It was never going to be a full-blown FTA – though No 10 spin has talked up the deal as much as possible, with the government using the phrase ‘trade deal’ when in fact the agreement is a sector specific response to the US tariff policy…

A UK official said “Thursday’s announcement will set out general terms and focus on specific sectors.” It is unclear if parliamentary approval will be required. Starmer getting caught in the Trump comms machine…
