A Fox News correspondent visited the Newark ICE detention center just hours before a scheduled visit by several Democratic officials and offered a detailed account of the facility’s conditions, challenging the claims and tactics of lawmakers who had previously attempted to confront staff without prior coordination.
On Friday, multiple Democratic lawmakers, including Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and U.S. Representatives LaMonica McIver, Robert Menendez Jr., and Bonnie Watson Coleman, arrived at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Newark.
Best view I’ve seen of Newark Mayor Baraka being arrested at ICE NJ on Friday and Rep. McIver (red jacket) obstructing, shoving law enforcement, and then hitting law enforcement.
Rep. Menendez came in with a hit too (right).
The reps then forced their way in.

According to officials, the group attempted to enter the facility without appointments, allegedly confronting officers and disrupting operations.

The incident drew scrutiny from law enforcement, and charges could be considered based on the conduct of those involved.
In contrast, Fox News correspondent Rachel Campos-Duffy visited the same facility with a scheduled appointment.
She appeared on “Fox & Friends” Monday morning and shared her observations during a live segment.
“I came over to the ICE detention facility. I received the tour Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a representative out of New York, is going to receive a few hours from now,” Campos-Duffy told Fox News co-hosts Ainsley Earhardt, Lawrence Jones, and Brian Kilmeade.
Campos-Duffy described the facility as clean and well-maintained, with a variety of resources available for detainees.
“ICE has nothing to hide. They have nothing to be ashamed of,” she said.
“This facility is so clean. It has all kinds of recreation facilities, outdoor soccer field, weight equipment, domino tables. It has telephones everywhere with signs next to them of how they can, phone numbers to reach their consulate and also legal facilities, computer web cams.”
Campos-Duffy also commented on the layout and conditions inside the facility.
“There are doors on the bedrooms and they aren’t even locked,” she noted.
“The facility actually looks like a high school—looks better than a lot of high schools. Prisons in America could take a lesson.”
The tour was led by ICE Boston Field Office Director Todd Lyons, who explained why ICE partners with private contractors.
According to Lyons, the agency’s facility standards are higher than those of most state and local facilities, making it too costly to retrofit public spaces to meet federal detention requirements.
Campos-Duffy further reported the presence of multilingual signage inside the facility, including signs that ask, “Do you want to go home?” accompanied by a phone number that detainees can call to receive $1,000 and a free flight back to their country of origin.

The visit provided a stark contrast to the scene that unfolded days earlier when Democratic officials arrived without notice and attempted to enter the facility.
According to ICE staff, the group disrupted routine operations and confronted officers.
The visit was described by agency personnel as disorderly, and the incident could potentially result in legal consequences.
The contrast in approach—an authorized tour versus an uncoordinated confrontation—has drawn attention to differing methods of oversight and engagement regarding federal immigration enforcement.
As of Monday, ICE has not released a formal statement on the incident involving the Democratic delegation.
The agency did not confirm whether charges would be filed against any individuals involved.
The Newark facility remains under federal jurisdiction and operates under ICE’s national detention standards, which outline housing, medical care, legal access, and visitation policies for non-citizen detainees.
