The View’ co-hosts try to wrap their heads around why Trump beat Hillary, Kamala Harris

Daily Caller News Foundation

“The View” co-hosts attempted to wrap their heads around why neither female presidential nominee could successfully defeat President Donald Trump during a Thursday segment.

Co-hosts Sunny Hostin and Joy Behar suggested that the nation voted against former 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and former Vice President Kamala Harris simply because they do not want a woman in the Oval Office. Hostin claimed that the U.S. is a “misogynistic country” because it has failed to elect a woman.

“Hillary Clinton was one of the most qualified candidate[s] in presidential history,” Hostin said, leading Behar to say she lost to a “failed game show host.” “They weaponized her husband against Hillary Clinton and the bottomline is this country is a misogynistic country and this country is a country that out of all the first world countries hasn’t been able to elect a female president. That is just factual.”

Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin scoffed at the idea that Harris lost because of misogyny, stating that public polling and fundraising soared once she replaced former President Joe Biden as the Democrat candidate in July. During his May 8 appearance on show, Biden blamed sexism for Harris’ loss and said he was not surprised by the results.

“Sexism [and] racism absolutely exist,” Griffin said. “It absolutely is a factor in elections. It is not the determinative factor in the 2024 election and I disagreed strongly with President Biden when he basically blamed that on why Kamala Harris lost. He outperformed Joe Biden when she was in the race. The numbers went up, the fundraising went up, she had a short window to run and I think all the data we have when you see why she lost the race, it is not because a bunch of racist Democrats didn’t turn out for her. That’s not why.”

Behar further suggested that women candidates failing to get elected president is proof that the U.S. is misogynistic.

“But there’s a reality to the situation that we have experienced in the past, what?  Ten years. You know, we have experienced the reality that these women can’t get elected. You have to acknowledge it’s certainly there that certain people cannot hurdle up to a woman running this country. They don’t want it,” Behar said.

Co-host Sara Haines argued that both Clinton and Harris had “distinguishing factors” that contributed to their losses. She stated that Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, carried a lot of “baggage” from their past that led people to distrust and oppose her candidacy.

With the economy and immigration being voters’ top issues, public polling found that a majority of voters trusted Trump over Harris to handle these top issues. These issues also contributed to Trump making massive inroads with black and Latino men, while Harris underperformed with these demographics.

Trump won the Latino male vote in the 2024 election, garnering 55% of support among that voter block in an NBC News exit poll. The exit poll also found that Trump won a majority of white women, 53% to 46%, against Harris.
