Former FBI Director James Comey is under federal investigation following an Instagram post that many have interpreted as a veiled threat against President Donald Trump.
The post, made on Thursday, featured a photo of seashells arranged to read “86 47,” with the caption, “Cool shell formation on my beach walk.”

Trump’s Sovereign Wealth Fund: What Could It Mean For Your Money?
The number “86” is widely understood as slang for “eliminate” or “get rid of,” and “47” is a reference to President Trump, who is serving as the 47th President of the United States.
The post quickly sparked intense backlash across social media, with critics accusing Comey of intentionally posting a coded message advocating for violence against the president.

Comey deleted the original post following the public outcry and updated it with a new caption.
However, many pointed out that as a former FBI Director, Comey would have been well aware of the meaning behind the phrase “86,” raising concerns over the post’s intent.
The U.S. Secret Service, FBI, and Department of Homeland Security are now investigating the matter.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem addressed the situation directly in a post on X writing, “Disgraced former FBI Director James Comey just called for the assassination of @POTUS Trump. DHS and Secret Service is investigating this threat and will respond appropriately.”
Several members of Congress also responded, calling for immediate accountability. Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee wrote simply, “Arrest Comey.” Rep. Greg Steube of Florida issued a longer statement on X, writing:
“Jim Comey has built quite the rap sheet. Add ‘inciting the assassination of a President’ to the long list of things he should be investigated for:
Lying to Congress
Leaking classified memos
Illegally surveilling the Trump campaign
Covering for Hillary Clinton
Weaponizing the FBI against political opponents
Undermining a sitting President
Playing politics with justice
Now: ‘86 47’”

“We are in communication with the Secret Service and Director Curran. Primary jurisdiction is with SS on these matters and we, the FBI, will provide all necessary support,” Patel said in a statement on X.

Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi also confirmed the investigation, stating, “We vigorously investigate anything that can be taken as a potential threat against our protectees. We are aware of the social media posts by the former FBI Director & we take rhetoric like this very seriously. Beyond that, we do not comment on protective intelligence matters.”

Speaking to Jesse Watters, Gabbard said, “James Comey, in my view, should be held accountable and put behind bars for this.”

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino added his voice to the chorus of condemnation, writing, “Comey truly is a POS. While he’ll claim not to know what 8647 means, there’s no doubt that the former disgraced FBI Dir. knows exactly what he’s doing, with a plea to bad actors/terrorists to assassinate the POTUS while traveling internationally. Don’t let him get away with it!!”

In a twist that added further scrutiny to the timing of the post, users on X noted that May 15, 2025, marked exactly 8,647 days since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, according to data from Google and Time and Date.
