X users bid good riddance to departing CBS News exec

Wendy McMahon announced on Monday that she will be stepping down from her role as the CEO of CBS News.

In an internal memo obtained by Mediaite, McMahon admits, “the past few months have been challenging.”

“Today, I am stepping down from my position as president and CEO of CBS News and Stations and CBS Media Ventures,” she said. “This has been one of the most meaningful chapters in my career. Leading this extraordinary organization has been the honor of a lifetime because I got to work alongside all of you. Your commitment to truth, fairness, and the highest standards is unassailable … At the same time, the past few months have been challenging. It’s become clear that the company and I do not agree on the path forward. It’s time for me to move on and for this organization to move forward with new leadership.”

This move comes amid efforts to sell the company by Paramount’s controlling shareholder, Shari Redstone, who is also accused of attempting to micromanage the newsroom to appeal to President Donald Trump’s administration. This behavior may have also led to the resignation of former executive producer of 60 Minutes Bill Owens, though there is no official confirmation of this being the case.

“George Cheeks, the CEO of CBS, did not allude to any tensions or disagreements in his own memo announcing McMahon’s departure, instead extolling her run as head of the network and thanking her for her service. Cheeks said that CBS News president Tom Cibrowski and CBS Stations president Jennifer Mitchell will now report directly to him,” Mediaite reported on Monday.
