Democratic Delaware Sen. Chris Coons struggled on Fox News Wednesday to defend his past confidence in former President Joe Biden’s mental acuity as he dodged direct questions about whether he regrets misleading the public.
Coons previously said Biden was engaging and capable and insisted the president wouldn’t run for reelection if he weren’t confident he was still up to the job. During an appearance on “Special Report with Bret Baier,” host Bret Baier pressed Coons on whether he stood by his previous characterizations of Biden and his cognitive fitness.
“Bret, I was surprised by what I saw the night of the debate. I hadn’t had a previous experience like that with President Biden. Ultimately, several weeks later, he decided to drop out,” Coons told Baier. “And, frankly, rather than looking back and relitigating the timing and the decision, I think we should be looking forward at how we can come together and confront the challenges facing our country at home and around the world.”
Baier followed up, asking Coons if he had reconsidered how he analyzed Biden’s mental sharpness after months of media revelations and behind-the-scenes accounts from staff. Coons deflected again. (RELATED: Kamala Harris Spits Out Another Word Salad, This Time Comparing Dems To GOP Symbol)

“Bret, I don’t think it’s a news story that Joe Biden is a seasoned senior leader of our country. It was probably the most covered story of 2024, questions about his age. I don’t have questions about whether he was capable of being an effective president,” Coons said. “Ultimately, he did not run again. And, in the end, I think he made the right [call].”
Biden withdrew from the presidential race in July after a disastrous debate performance raised widespread concerns about his fitness for office. Since leaving office in January, Biden gave one major speech and sat for interviews with “The View” and the BBC. During his May 8 appearance on “The View,” he denied having cognitive decline while in office.
New revelations suggest that Biden’s inner circle deliberately hid the extent of his deterioration from cabinet members, lawmakers and the public. That concern deepened Sunday when his office said doctors had diagnosed him Friday with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had spread to his bones.
