Sen. Kennedy shocked by $93B in Energy loans in 3 mos before Trump took office

Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) was shocked by the revelation that in the 76 days between the time President Donald J. Trump was elected and President Joe Biden left office, the Department of Energy approved $93 billion in loans.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright was testifying this week before the U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development on the department’s fiscal 2026 budget request, when Kennedy asked about the time between Trump’s election and inauguration.

“During that short period of time, 76 days, how much taxpayer money went out the door of the Department of Energy?” he asked.

“From the Loan Program Office, in loans and commitments, $93 billion dollars. Well over twice as much as in the previous 15 years,” Wright said.

The Loan Programs Office was established in 2005 and “provides loans and loan guarantees available to help deploy innovative clean energy, advanced transportation, and Tribal energy projects in the United States,” according to the Energy Department website, which said that as of Sept. 2024, the LPO had “financed a $43.9 billion portfolio of innovative clean energy projects and advanced technology vehicle manufacturing facilities across the United States.”

And whoever was running the country during the Biden regime more than doubled that amount in less than 3 months. In effect, ripping off taxpayers to advance a politically-motivated Green New Deal — in a best case scenario.

In a follow-up, Kennedy asked, “How do you vet and do due diligence on a loan in 76 days? ONE loan, much less $93 billion dollars. How do you do it?”

“I think it’s pretty clear it wasn’t done in many cases,” Wright answered. “There are lots of funds that have gone out the door and commitments that were made from businesses that provided no business plan — no numbers about their own financial solvency.”

“So you’re telling me that the Department of Energy, in the 76 day period, before their boss was gonna leave office, gave or loaned money to entities that had no business plan?” the GOP senator asked.

“Correct,” Wright replied.

Given the criminal contempt for taxpayers by corrupt government officials and the absolute lack of accountability for the DC political class, Americans have few options. Either continue sending their checks to Washington or be jailed — by those who should be in prison themselves.
