NewsNation host Chris Cuomo criticized Democrats on Thursday for prioritizing President Donald Trump’s failure over the well-being of the nation.
Democrats have long expressed contempt for Trump, making resisting his agenda a priority and hoping for his political demise. Cuomo argued on “CUOMO” that Democrats would rather see Trump “fail” than achieve victories for the United States, calling their stance “poisonous.”

“It seems that too many of you just want Trump to fail, even if it means the country suffers. And this is where I got to stand and say no, okay? This is where politics becomes poisonous to the American people,” Cuomo said. “Are you somebody who gets upset when I say, ‘Gee, I hope the Trump administration gets some wins on trade,’ or, ‘I hope that Trump gets a win by getting Hamas to accept the ceasefire deal that Israel has already accepted’? I really think people have to start thinking about what they actually want. Do you just want advantage over Trump or the Democrats, or do you want the advancement of the country? Are you an American, or an American’t?”
“This is why I caution Democrats they need to move past constantly praying for Trump’s downfall. Not because I have a horse in the party race — I am against the party system, okay? But what do I want? I want better for your family. I want better for my family,” he continued. “I’m worried about my oldest, who just got out of college, and what her future holds. And she is luckier than most. First and foremost, though, I want better for us. And I don’t care who makes it happen. I don’t even care that much how, to be honest. Now, I’m not sure how many in the arena really feel that same way — or at least would admit it.”
Cuomo also asserted on his May 21 broadcast that CNN anchor Jake Tapper and Axios reporter Alex Thompson’s new book “Original Sin” is a cover-up of the media’s past desire for former President Joe Biden to defeat Trump, based on how it places the blame on the former president’s inner circle for concealed his decline, impeding the media’s ability to report on it.
ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith agreed with Cuomo on “The Stephen A. Smith Show” Tuesday, adding that the media’s role in hiding Biden’s cognitive decline bolsters Trump’s claims that the left would go to any lengths to defeat him, including fake news and lawfare.
“It makes Trump look right. Because that hatred for him that led people to compromise their own professional principles just to ensure that he didn’t win the presidency — well, if you were willing to do that, then all of a sudden, does it not buffer his arguments about lawfare being exercised against him?” Smith asked. “Does it not buffer his arguments about fake news, fake news, fake news? Does it not buffer the credibility that comes to his arguments that it was a witch hunt? Does it not in some way buffer the notion that somebody might have cheated him in 2020?”
