Ukraine Unleashes Surprise Drone Attack 2,500 Miles Deep Into Russia [WATCH]

Ukrainian forces carried out a series of coordinated drone strikes over the weekend targeting Russian air bases deep inside the country, damaging and destroying dozens of aircraft, including nuclear-capable bombers, according to Ukrainian officials.

The operation, reportedly planned for over a year and a half, was codenamed “Operation Spider’s Web.”

It involved first-person-view (FPV) drones transported into Russia and concealed in wooden cabins mounted on trucks near airfields.

At the designated time, the roofs of the cabins were opened remotely, and the drones launched directly toward their targets.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) said the strikes hit 41 Russian aircraft stationed at four different military installations across the country.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky personally oversaw the planning and execution of the mission, according to a source cited by the Kyiv Independent.

Among the aircraft reportedly damaged or destroyed were TU-95 “Bear” bombers, TU-22 “Backfire” bombers, and A-50 “Mainstay” command-and-control aircraft.

Kyiv claims the losses amount to more than one-third of Russia’s strategic bomber fleet, with an estimated value of at least $7 billion.

Video circulating on social media appeared to show multiple aircraft on fire at one of the targeted airfields.

Additional footage showed drones being launched from the trucks stationed near the Russian bases.

The airfields targeted in the attack were located in Irkutsk in Siberia, Murmansk within the Arctic Circle, Ryazan southeast of Moscow, and Ivanovo northeast of the capital.

The Irkutsk facility is located nearly 2,500 miles from Ukraine.

A source told the Kyiv Independent, “The SBU first transported FPV drones to Russia, and later on the territory of the Russian Federation, the drones were hidden under the roofs of mobile wooden cabins, already placed on trucks. At the right moment, the roofs of the cabins were opened remotely, and the drones flew to hit Russian bombers.”

The strikes were reportedly in retaliation for one of the largest drone assaults launched by Russia since the war began.

According to Ukrainian officials, Russia used 472 drones along with seven ballistic and cruise missiles in attacks last week. Ukrainian air defense forces claimed to have intercepted 385 of the aerial threats.

Zelensky made a public statement on X following the mission, writing, “These are Ukrainian actions that will undoubtedly be in history books. One year, six months, and nine days from the start of planning to effective execution. Our most long-range operation. Our people involved in preparing the operation were withdrawn from Russian territory in time.”

Zelensky also claimed that the operation headquarters had been located “right next to” the FSB, Russia’s federal security service.

Andriy Yermak, Zelensky’s chief of staff, posted an emoji of a spider web on X shortly before the attack.

The strike came just one day ahead of a scheduled meeting between Russian and Ukrainian officials in Istanbul, which had been part of ceasefire talks backed by the United States.

Axios reported that Ukrainian officials did not inform the White House in advance of the operation.

President Donald Trump has continued urging both sides to engage in negotiations to end the ongoing war, which is now in its third year.

The latest escalation has raised concerns that prospects for a ceasefire may be further complicated.

Zelensky stated that Ukraine remained committed to the peace process but was waiting for Russia to provide a memorandum outlining its terms.

“For a meeting to be meaningful, its agenda must be clear, and the negotiations must be properly prepared,” Zelensky wrote on X.

“Unfortunately, Russia is doing everything it can to ensure that the next potential meeting brings no results.”

Zelensky’s demands in the wake of Sunday’s operation included an immediate and unconditional ceasefire by Russia, the release of all prisoners, and the return of Ukrainian children who were abducted during the conflict.

Moscow has so far rejected calls for an unconditional ceasefire and has made demands that Ukraine has declined.

In a separate incident, two bridges near the Ukrainian border reportedly collapsed over the weekend, killing at least seven people.

Russian investigators have attributed the destruction to sabotage.
