Conservative YIMBY is out of the traps with proposals to scrap nutrient neutrality rules, remove council blocking powers on commercial-residential conversions, force neighbourhood planning rules to align with the National Planning Policy Framework, and reducing paperwork, among others. While younger Tories always start off pro-housing the group reports to Guido that “even older councillors and MPs are coming around” if they can be convinced that housebuilding is a vote-winner. The new (small) intake of 2024 Tory MPs, who often complain about their older ‘fatalistic’ colleagues, are also more keen on development projects…

Guido hears the campaign’s next move this summer on top of its policy proposals will be to launch a “YIMBY Handbook” for Tory MPs and councillors “on how to build without losing votes.” It’s an uphill battle – even frontbenchers are advertising their campaigns against new homes…
