Fetterman lashes out over media smear campaign

As “left kind of media” continued to hound Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman (D) for breaking lockstep with the rest of his Party, he said what he really thought about the “weird smear.”

In the modern monoliths representative of partisan politics, few public officials routinely take a stance of open opposition to the preferred platform. Marking himself as an exception on the border, Israel and keeping the government running, Fetterman was once again shaking off “public scrutiny,” this time foisted on him by the editorial board of The Philadelphia Inquirer.

“How do you answer these calls by the Philadelphia Inquirer for you to be more engaged in showing up to represent your constituents in Pennsylvania and questioning whether you have the desire to continue doing so?” asked Fox News host Shannon Bream as she moderated a debate between Democrat and his fellow Pennsylvania Sen. Dave McCormick (R) on Fox Nation.

“Oh, well, for me it’s very clear. It’s just part of like this weird — this weird smear, this thing. And now, the, you know, the things more — I started to kind of — you know, following Israel or the border, and now really refusing to vote to shut the government down, I’ve continued to get more and more kinds of incoming and those things, and all of those things,” expressed Fetterman.

Attempting to frame the lawmaker as “frequently absent,” spending time by himself while “avoiding colleagues and meetings,” the op-ed argued, “Being an elected official comes with public scrutiny. If Fetterman can’t handle the attention or perform his job, then in the best interest of the country and the nearly 13 million residents of Pennsylvania he represents, he should step aside.”

“It’s time for Fetterman to serve Pennsylvanians, or step away,” concluded the piece that made a point of demanding elected officials “stand up to Donald Trump’s naked authoritarianism, corruption, and incompetence.”

Furthering his response, the senator told Bream, “So, the more kinds of — left kind of media continues to have these kinds of an attack, and it’s just part of a smear and that’s just not an accu- — it’s just not accurate. And we’ve moved on, and why we’re still having this conversation — why at this point?”

Leading up to the 2024 presidential election, the left’s love of extremists had proven a self-inflicted wound as Hamas sympathizers within the Democratic Party and its base had been one example of a sect protesting over opposition to any actions that even resembled support for Israel.

Meanwhile, Fetterman had remained unabashedly in favor of defending the Jewish state and calling out the inhumane actions of the Islamists. In May, he had drawn attention to a headline from The New York Times and stated, “The depravity to target and celebrate killing a pregnant woman as a ‘heroic operation.’ Call that what it is and pick a side in this existential war.”

Supporting the conclusion that the “smear” was about his positions and not about the number of votes he may have missed — which he himself dismissed as “throwaway procedural votes” — Fetterman asserted that both Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders (I) and Washington Sen. Patty Murray (D) had missed more. “So why aren’t the left media yelling and demanding them and claiming they’re not doing their job and those kinds of a thing? Just be genuine on that.”
