Amazon has unveiled plans to invest $10 billion in the development of new data centers in North Carolina, a major expansion that will support the company’s artificial intelligence and cloud computing infrastructure.
The announcement was made Wednesday and represents Amazon Web Services’ latest effort to compete with other tech industry leaders like Google and Microsoft in the race to dominate the AI sector.

The investment will establish multiple high-tech data facilities and is expected to create at least 500 new jobs in the state.
The roles will include data center engineers, network specialists, security professionals, and engineering operations managers.

In addition to direct employment, the company noted that the project will support thousands of other jobs across its broader supply chain.
“Generative AI is driving increased demand for advanced cloud infrastructure and compute power, and our investment will support the future of AI from AWS data centers in the Tar Heel State,” Amazon said in an official blog post on Wednesday.
“This deployment of cutting-edge cloud computing infrastructure will strengthen North Carolina’s position as an innovation hub.”
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has been rapidly expanding its infrastructure footprint as demand for generative AI and cloud-based computing continues to grow.
Earlier this year, in January, AWS committed to a separate $11 billion infrastructure investment in Georgia.
The company’s latest North Carolina initiative continues this broader strategy to bolster its technological capabilities and increase competitiveness in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape.
Amazon’s rivals, including Google and Microsoft, have already invested heavily in similar efforts to build AI-optimized infrastructure, particularly data centers equipped to handle the enormous processing power required for training and running large-scale machine learning models.
In his 2024 annual letter to shareholders, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy emphasized the critical role of generative AI in shaping the company’s strategic direction.
“Generative AI is going to reinvent virtually every customer experience we know, and enable altogether new ones about which we’ve only fantasized,” Jassy wrote.
Jassy further highlighted the importance of integrating AI into the customer experience, describing it as a necessary component of remaining competitive in the evolving digital landscape.
“If your customer experiences aren’t planning to leverage these intelligent models, their ability to query giant corpuses of data and quickly find your needle in the haystack, their ability to keep getting smarter with more feedback and data, and their future agentic capabilities, you will not be competitive,” he added.
Amazon has not yet disclosed the specific locations of the new data centers within North Carolina.
However, the company indicated that site preparation and early development work are expected to begin in the near future, with full deployment timelines to follow.
The North Carolina Department of Commerce has not yet issued a formal response to the announcement, but the scale of the investment is likely to draw attention from state economic development officials and local governments.
With this move, Amazon joins a growing list of tech companies betting heavily on infrastructure to meet the demands of artificial intelligence and cloud computing.
The North Carolina project underscores the intensifying race among industry giants to secure a leading position in the next era of digital innovation.
