Amazon set to test humanoid package delivery robots: report

Elon Musk has predicted that “10 billion humanoid robots” will one day outnumber people on Earth, and Amazon is well on its way as a leader in the use of robotics.

In addition to other efforts in the field, Amazon is testing package-delivery bots that would walk right up to your door to deliver items, according to CNET.

“Amazon has been touting its work in robotics for the home and for warehouse work, but this is the first time the company has made an explicit push into using human-like robotics for package delivery, which could replace human workers,” the tech website reported. “The robots would use some of the same AI technology that the company is rolling across other areas of its business.”

CNET  reported that Amazon is also “working on humanoid robots that would work in its warehouses,” per Reuters.

“We’re developing foundation models that will allow fulfillment center robots to understand and act on natural language commands,” the retail giant said in a post on X. “Imagine saying ‘Pick up that yellow tote’ and having a robot do it instantly. The future of robotics is here, and it speaks your language.”

Amazon has reportedly deployed over 750,000 robots to work alongside its employees, according to an April 2024 report from Yahoo Finance, which noted that the company has seen a “decrease of over 100,000 employees from the 1.6 million workers it had in 2021.”

“The development of our Agentic AI framework represents a fundamental shift in robotics,” Amazon announced in a media packet. “Instead of rigid, specialized robots, we’re creating systems that can hear, understand, and act on natural language commands, turning warehouse robots into flexible, multi-talented assistants.”
