Elon Musk agrees he and Trump should ‘make peace’ for benefit of the country

The “bromance” between President Donald J. Trump and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk took on the characteristics of a dumpster fire on Thursday as it came to an apparent end.

However, in the face of reports that the split was “irreparable,” Musk seemed to suggest he and Trump should “make peace” for the benefit of the country — Republicans could not ask for a better ally than the billionaire entrepreneur.

The breakup dominated the news cycle as the left reveled in the “first buddy” being on the outs with the president. At the same time, billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman represented the sentiments of many when he called for a mending of the fences.

“I support @realDonaldTrump and @elonmusk and they should make peace for the benefit of our great country. We are much stronger together than apart,” Ackman wrote.

Musk responded to the post to say, “You’re not wrong.”

The reasoning Trump offered on Truth Social for the split suggests Musk has more to gain here, which is something he should have considered when he posted that the reason the Epstein files have not been released is that Trump is named in them.

“Elon was ‘wearing thin,’ I asked him to leave,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “I took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went CRAZY!”

In a follow-up post, he called for terminating Musk’s contracts with the federal government, saying that would be “the easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars.”

In the first signs of trouble, Musk came out forcefully against the “Big Beautiful Bill” on Thursday that Trump is enthusiastically pushing, citing legitimate concerns about the debt being racked up and how it will “enslave” the nation.

“I don’t mind Elon turning against me, but he should have done so months ago,” Trump posted. “This is one of the Greatest Bills ever presented to Congress. It’s a Record Cut in Expenses, $1.6 Trillion Dollars, and the Biggest Tax Cut ever given. If this Bill doesn’t pass, there will be a 68% Tax Increase, and things far worse than that. I didn’t create this mess, I’m just here to FIX IT. This puts our Country on a Path of Greatness. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Social media users seemed to lean toward reconciliation, if possible — here’s a sampling of responses to the story, as seen on X:
