Starmer Repeats Baseless Claim China Opposed Chagos Surrender Deal

Kemi Badenoch took aim at Starmer in the Commons over revelations that Mauritius is using UK taxpayers’ cash from the Chagos surrender deal to scrap income tax for 81% of Mauritian workers and raise the minimum wage. Starmer responded again by repeating the false claim that China opposed the deal:

“This has been welcomed by our allies: by the US by NATO by Australia, New Zealand, India. It’s been opposed by our adversaries Russia, China and Iran.”

As Guido first revealed, this claim Starmer has made in Parliament is unsubstantiated – China publicly welcomed the agreement, offering Mauritius its “massive congratulations” over the sellout. Meanwhile, Number 10 still can’t provide any evidence that China ever opposed the deal. This is getting shameless now…
