Dems Pritzker, Johnson Trying to Recreate George Floyd Riots: Chicago Alderman [WATCH]

Chicago Alderman Raymond Lopez is warning that efforts are underway to recreate the level of unrest seen during the 2020 George Floyd riots, both in Chicago and in other cities across the country.

Lopez made the comments Thursday during an appearance on NewsNation Live, where he also criticized state and city leaders for encouraging resistance to federal immigration enforcement.

“There are many who are trying to recreate the chaos of the 2020 George Floyd riots here in the city of Chicago and in other cities across the nation,” Lopez said.

“But, thankfully, our police are doing their very best to try and keep them at bay, limiting their access to the same kinds of fake weaponry that they used last time.”

Lopez, a longtime critic of lenient policies toward crime and immigration enforcement, also took aim at Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson for encouraging opposition to federal efforts aimed at immigration control.

“But the political leadership is encouraging them to continue to resist, whether it’s the governor or the Mayor, Brandon Johnson saying that they need to keep resisting this administration, protecting our brothers and sisters, all in defiance of what the federal authorities are trying to do, which is to rein in the unchecked immigration that’s gone on [over] the last four years,” Lopez said.

As federal agencies continue immigration enforcement actions in major urban areas, including Chicago, protests have erupted in opposition.

Law enforcement agencies have reported difficulties in containing crowds, with some demonstrations resulting in violence, property damage, and blockades.

Alderman Lopez said these challenges place an additional burden on local police forces already operating under strained conditions.

“I think it’s important, as we saw in 2020, that the National Guard should be here to help protect the property so that the police can focus on arresting people, which is their responsibility and they have the authority to do so,” Lopez said.

“Any argument to the otherwise simply puts police and the city’s law-abiding citizens at risk.”

In 2020, parts of Chicago were rocked by widespread rioting, looting, and violent confrontations with police following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Businesses across downtown and various neighborhoods were vandalized, and the National Guard was eventually deployed to restore order.

Lopez has frequently pushed for stronger law enforcement responses to unrest and has been outspoken in opposing Mayor Brandon Johnson’s approach to public safety and immigration policy.

Mayor Johnson has defended his position, saying the city must continue to support immigrant communities and resist what he calls “inhumane federal enforcement.”

The growing tensions in Chicago come amid ongoing protests and immigration-related demonstrations in other major cities, including Los Angeles and New York.

With continued calls for sanctuary city protections clashing with federal enforcement actions, local officials like Lopez are demanding more security measures to prevent violence and protect residents.

As of Thursday, city officials had not announced any plans to request National Guard support.

Chicago Police Department representatives have said they are monitoring potential unrest and adjusting deployments as necessary.

Federal authorities have not responded publicly to Lopez’s remarks, but law enforcement sources say coordination efforts between local and federal agencies remain ongoing in anticipation of additional protests in the coming days.
