Anti-ICE Protest Turns Violent; Rioters Block SUV After Four Illegal Aliens Escape [WATCH]

Four illegal immigrants escaped from the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark, New Jersey, on Thursday evening after a disturbance involving dozens of detainees, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The incident occurred at the privately operated ICE facility when approximately 50 detainees became unruly over an alleged delay in meal distribution.

The disturbance escalated into a physical revolt that resulted in the breach of a dormitory wall and the escape of four individuals.

Immigration attorney Mustafa Cetin told NJ.com that the unrest began over food delays.

“It’s about the food, and some of the detainees were getting aggressive, and it turned violent,” Cetin said.

He noted that one of his clients inside the facility reported the wall that was breached was “not very strong.”

Cetin also said detainees had hung bedsheets, which he believes may have been used as part of the escape plan.

A senior DHS official confirmed to Fox News that a search is underway, stating, “Additional law enforcement partners have been brought in to find the escapees, and a BOLO [be on the lookout] has been disseminated.”

The escape triggered a large law enforcement response.

By approximately 6:00 p.m., officers from the Newark Police Department and the Essex County Sheriff’s Office were stationed outside Delaney Hall.

Photos of the scene were shared on social media by Rutgers University professor Whitney Strub, showing a heavy law enforcement presence.

Later that evening, at around 9:00 p.m., outside agitation intensified.

Protesters gathered at one of the facility’s gates and were seen blocking an SUV from exiting.

Video footage captured by Freedom News TV showed the group demanding that federal agents prove the vehicle was empty.

The SUV ultimately retreated back inside the facility as the protesters refused to let it pass.

Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka released a statement expressing concern over the events.

“We are concerned about reports of what has transpired at Delaney Hall this evening, ranging from withholding food and poor treatment, to uprising and escaped detainees,” Baraka said.

“This entire situation lacks sufficient oversight of every basic detail.”

Baraka called for increased access to the facility for local officials and lawmakers.

“This is why city officials and our congressional delegation need to be allowed entry to observe and monitor, and why private prisons pose a very real problem to our state and constitution,” he said.

“We demand immediate answers and clear communication with the GEO Group and the Department of Homeland Security. We must put an end to this chaos and not allow this operation to continue unchecked.”

Delaney Hall is operated by the GEO Group under contract with federal immigration authorities.

The private facility houses detainees awaiting immigration proceedings or deportation.

In a follow-up statement on Friday, DHS urged the public to assist in locating the escapees.

“We encourage the public to call 911 or the ICE Tip Line: 866-DHS-2-ICE if they have information that may lead to the locating of these individuals,” the agency said.

The names and identities of the four escapees have not been released. DHS has not provided a timeline for when the detainees breached the wall or how long the facility’s security systems took to respond.
