Just 28 MPs Could Overturn Assisted Dying Vote Tomorrow
Tomorrow MPs will vote on the Assisted Suicide Bill at the Third Reading. Numbers are on a knife-edge…
So far, 154 MPs are planning to vote for it, 144 plan to vote against it, 22 remain undecided and 21 are due to abstain. Since Report Stage, Kanishka Narayan becomes the 15th MP who has publicly switched to opposing the Bill, including a broad range of new intake and old guard Labour MPs. Only 28 MPs need to switch their minds to overturn the majority at the Second Reading…
Guido has been shown modelling suggesting it will likely be within 10 votes either way, with many expected to make up their minds during the debate tomorrow. It will come down to which MPs decide to abstain and which side gets their vote out. A reminder of the timeline since the Second Reading in November:
– 21 January: Committee stage begins.
– 12 March: High court safeguard dropped from the Bill.
– 19 March: Committee forced to sit late into the night (15 hours total).
– 25 March: Committee stage finishes.
– 8 April: Kim Leadbeater postpones Report stage. Pushing it after the local elections…
– 16 May: Rebecca Paul’s amendment rejected at Report.
– 15 June: Second Day of Report. Three amendments rejected by MPs, and Leadbeater suffers her first defeat (NC2) to ensure doctors can’t raise the issue with children.
– 17 June: At Health Questions, Wes Streeting confirms no money has been allocated for the implementation of the Bill.
All to play for…
