Elon Musk’s SpaceX Starship burst into flames during a launch test Wednesday night, sending a fiery ball of flames into the sky.
Everything seemed to be going to plan until the sudden, intense explosion was caught on camera. Video footage of the shocking moment showed orange and red flames erupting into the night sky, as loud bangs roared. The blast occurred just after 11:00 p.m. CT at the Texas Starbase facility near Boca Chica Beach as SpaceX was preparing for the 10th test launch of its Starship. This was pegged as the world’s most powerful launch vehicle ever developed.
SpaceX quickly addressed the roaring flames, calling the incident a “major anomaly.”
“On Wednesday, June 18 at approximately 11 p.m. CT, the Starship preparing for the tenth flight test experienced a major anomaly while on a test stand at Starbase. A safety clear area around the site was maintained throughout the operation and all personnel are safe and accounted for,” Space X wrote. “Our Starbase team is actively working to safe the test site and the immediate surrounding area in conjunction with local officials. There are no hazards to residents in surrounding communities, and we ask that individuals do not attempt to approach the area while safing operations continue,” they said.

Musk casually tweeted about the powerful explosion Thursday morning, writing simply, “Just a scratch.”
TMZ reported that the eruption was felt from a great distant. They claimed a resident as far away as Brownsville – a full 22 miles from the testing site – posted about the fireball in the sky on social media. SpaceX’s Starship has been riddled with technical failures. In June, a rocket burst info flames upon re-entry into orbit. Starship’s 7th and 8th launch tests also included flames that destroyed the rockets, according to TMZ.
