Federal agents deployed non-lethal munitions to disperse a large group of protesters who attempted to block access to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Portland, Oregon, on Wednesday night.
The confrontation took place outside the ICE building on Macadam Avenue, where protesters gathered as part of a series of demonstrations that have been ongoing for over a week in the self-declared sanctuary city.
Once again, PPB is in the South Portland neighborhood tonight in case there’s a need to address any public safety concerns and criminal behavior outside the ICE building. We will not be involved in immigration enforcement.

Video footage released by Turning Point USA’s Frontlines showed agents using rubber bullets, tear gas, and flash bang devices to push the crowd back after multiple warnings to disperse went unheeded.
Hundreds of protesters, many of whom were masked, began marching through the streets before sunset.
Some held signs that read, “Nobody is illegal on stolen land” and “Protect immigrants and refugees.”

The demonstrators later converged outside the ICE facility and began blocking entry points.
As the evening progressed, tensions rose.

Video footage showed protesters pushing a dumpster in front of the building’s entrance, prompting law enforcement officers positioned on a rooftop to deploy non-lethal blast balls into the crowd.
Despite repeated verbal warnings from law enforcement to vacate the premises, the protesters refused to comply.
Federal officers, dressed in riot gear, moved in to clear the area, deploying additional tear gas and munitions to force the group to retreat.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, the crowd was obstructing government vehicles attempting to enter and exit the facility.
During the standoff, some individuals in the crowd were seen launching smoke grenades toward the officers.
Protesters also chanted slogans such as “Whose streets? Our streets!” and shouted profanities at law enforcement personnel on site.

The PPB clarified that its role during the protest was limited to maintaining public safety in the surrounding areas and that it does not participate in immigration enforcement activities.
The Wednesday night incident follows a pattern of heightened tension between law enforcement and protest groups in Portland, a city that has seen repeated clashes over federal immigration policy in recent years.
.Demonstrators have consistently targeted ICE facilities, particularly during periods of increased national attention on border security and deportation policies.
As of Thursday morning, the ICE facility resumed normal operations.
Federal and local authorities continue to monitor for additional protests as demonstrations show no signs of abating.
