Metrorail service adjustments coming Sunday

Starting Sunday, the entire Metrorail system will be open longer on weekends, followed by more frequent trains on the Red Line and split service on the Silver Line starting next week.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority said in a release Friday that Metrorail will now close later and open earlier on weekends.

Currently, Metrorail closes at 1 a.m. Saturday and Sunday before reopening at 7 a.m.

Starting Sunday, the system will close at 2 a.m. Saturday and Sunday and reopen at 6 a.m.

On Monday, Red Line trains will start running every four minutes during the peak of weekday rush hour instead of running every five minutes, Metro said.

On the Silver Line, trains will be split, running from the Ashburn station to either the Downtown Largo station or the New Carrollton station.

During peak morning rush hour, additional trains will run from Wiehle-Reston East to New Carrollton, while during peak afternoon rush hour, additional trains will run from the Stadium-Armory station to Wiehle-Reston East.

Metro also said that beginning in December, the Yellow Line will be extended. Once the change is implemented, half of the Yellow Line trains will run from the Huntington station to the Greenbelt station, and the other half will run from Huntington to the Mount Vernon Square station.

The service changes come just days after Metro expanded automatic train operation to the entire Metrorail system for the first time since 2009. The ATO expansion is letting the system’s trains run faster, returning to their original speed of 75 mph.
