Deputy Chief Finley Carter III of the Michigan Police Department confirmed that the man drove his truck into the church building before opening fire.
“The suspect’s identity is not being released at this time,” Carter stated.
He also confirmed that the man was killed at the scene by the church’s armed security.
A video from the church’s livestream captured the moment chaos erupted.
Initially, families and children were seen participating in the service.
Moments later, confusion spread as loud noises from outside led to panic.
A church member is heard yelling for everyone to “get down” and urging them to move to the back of the building.
Screams filled the air as attendees, including children, fled the sanctuary. The video captured at least one loud bang during the incident.

CrossPointe’s senior pastor, Bobby Kelly Jr., told The Detroit News that a church member had intervened by striking the attacker with a vehicle just before the church’s security guard opened fire.
“He [the suspect] was run over by one of our members who saw this happening when he was coming into church,” Kelly said.
Pastor Kelly estimated that approximately 150 people were inside the church at the time of the attack, including many children.
He said many initially believed the sound was related to nearby construction until the reality of the threat became clear.
CrossPointe Church has had a dedicated security team for more than a decade, a decision made in response to rising violence targeting churches and other places of worship.
Kelly explained that the congregation had long felt vulnerable without security.
“We felt like sitting ducks,” he said.
The church leadership has scheduled a meeting to discuss next steps in the wake of the attack and how to provide emotional support for the community.
Kelly added that the children who witnessed the shooting were “doing good” and noted that the church was leaning on its faith and sense of unity.
CrossPointe Church’s regular Sunday schedule includes events from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with adult and youth Sunday School running from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
The sanctuary was full for vacation Bible school when the attack began.
Wendy Bodin, a member of the congregation, spoke with local outlet ClickOnDetroit.
She said she had been standing in the church lobby on a phone call when the suspect crashed into the building. “It was the scariest thing I’ve ever been involved in,” she said.
Bodin initially assumed the incident was a crash until she heard gunfire.
She took cover in a bathroom with another individual, hiding on top of a toilet with the door locked.
Once it was safe, she fled the building and met up with others who had escaped into the woods nearby.
“Fortunately they got everyone out of the building safe,” she said.
“We did have one man for sure got shot in the leg, but he’s OK, from what I’ve been told. So. Praise God.”
Bodin added that she was thankful the church service the previous Sunday, held outdoors for Father’s Day, was not the one targeted in the attack.
