‘I Thought We Were Over That’: Stephen A. Smith Furious Over Democrats’ Push To Impeach Trump For Striking Iran

Stephen A. Smith on Monday blasted Democrats for their renewed push to impeach President Donald Trump, following his decision to strike Iran.

Trump announced Saturday that the U.S. attacked Iran’s key nuclear facilities using a “bunker buster” bomb, designed to destroy weapons of mass destruction in well-protected sites. During a Monday episode of the “The Stephen A. Smith Show,” Smith said he was frustrated over the party’s insistence on impeaching Trump, despite his constitutional authority to act in matters of national defense.

“Same old song and dance. Thought we heard this before. I thought that was over and done with the minute you lost the election with the popular vote and the Electoral College vote and losing every swing state. I thought we were over that! But evidently not,” Smith said.

“No matter what you feel about the president of the United States, do you think that’s the time, while we’re in the middle of such strife, to be calling for the impeachment of the President of the United States? Particularly if you’re a representative, you’re an elected official in the United States of America? I don’t think so,” Smith added. “Were the Democrats saying that when Obama bombed Libya when he was in office? We’re making all of this noise about how the War Powers Act is utilized and how Donald Trump didn’t receive congressional approval.”

Smith explained the distinction between Trump’s actions and a declaration of war.

“Well, this is not an act of war. This is eradicating a threat. Civilians weren’t targeted. Nuclear sites were targeted. So, you can navigate your way around the War Powers Act itself, and you don’t have to concern yourself with receiving congressional approval,” Smith said. “The Democrats know that because of Obama. So, if you knew that because of Obama and you didn’t say it when it involved him in Libya, why would you turn around and all of a sudden try to make that case against Donald Trump?”

The War Powers Resolution (WPR) of 1973 allows the president to take military action without prior congressional approval in cases of emergency, requiring notification to Congress within 48 hours. Previous military actions, such as former President Barack Obama’s intervention in Libya, did not seek formal congressional approval, raising questions about the application of the WPR in these instances.

Democrats who previously supported Obama’s military action in Libya are now criticizing Trump’s strike on Iran’s nuclear sites. Despite defending Obama’s 2011 Libya intervention as constitutional, Democratic California Rep. Nancy Pelosi called Trump’s recent attack unconstitutional, ignoring the fact that Obama acted without congressional approval, citing a DOJ memo stating such approval wasn’t necessary.

Trump announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran following the U.S. strike on Iran’s nuclear sites. He congratulated both nations on the deal, which was set to take effect within hours and would last for 12 hours.
