John Fetterman dismisses AOC’s Trump impeachment push over Iran strikes

Daily Caller News Foundation

Democratic Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman criticized fellow Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for advocating to impeach President Donald Trump for striking Iranian nuclear sites without congressional approval.

Ocasio-Cortez called to impeach the president on X Saturday after his administration bombed Fordow, Natanz and Esfahan, three nuclear sites located outside of Tehran. Fetterman, on “America’s Newsroom,” called Ocasio-Cortez’s impeachment push unproductive and said invoking impeachment over the bombings risks cheapening the process.

“She knows it, I know it, we all know it. That’s not going anywhere. And, you know, he’s been impeached twice and now he’s still our president as well now, too,” Fetterman said. “So it’s not going anywhere. And I don’t think that’s helpful. And I think if you throw that term around, that actually diminishes the severity of what impeachment is reserved for.”

Fetterman also praised Trump’s decision to strike Iran in a Saturday X post, calling it “the correct move.”

“Iran is the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism and cannot have nuclear capabilities,” he wrote. “I’m grateful for and salute the finest military in the world.”

However, Trump has faced bipartisan backlash for the attack, with Republican Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie and Democrat California Rep. Ro Khanna both criticizing the president for not receiving congressional approval for it.

Radio host Charlamagne Tha God said on “The Breakfast Club” Monday that it seems hypocritical for lawmakers to denounce Trump’s decision to strike without congressional approval, based on previous presidents acting similarly without facing such significant opposition.

“This is one of those times where politicians sound like hypocrites because [Democratic Arizona Sen.] Mark Kelly is right: presidents should get congressional approval,” Charlamagne said. “But there have been a bunch of presidents who have ordered strikes without congressional approval. Barack Obama did it against Libya. Joe Biden ordered strikes in Iraq and Syria without congressional approval. Bill Clinton did it to Kosovo.”

Following the bombings, Trump called for regime change in Iran in a Sunday Truth Social post.

“It’s not politically correct to use the term, ‘Regime Change,’ but if the current Iranian Regime is unable to MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN, why wouldn’t there be a Regime change??? MIGA!!!” he wrote.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine outlined the success of the strikes during a Sunday Pentagon press briefing.

“This was a complex and high-risk mission, executed with remarkable precision,” Caine said. “Very few people in Washington knew about the timing and nature of the plan.”
