Labour Refuses to Publish China Surrender Audit
Lammy has just finishing his statement on the long-anticipated China Audit in the Commons. Labour is refusing to publish it…
This was never the position of the government, which told hacks looking for answers on China policy to await the audit. One they can’t read…
There is a reference to the document in the just-published National Security Review:
“The China Audit therefore recommends an increase in China capabilities across the national security system to strengthen ability to engage, as well as our resilience and readiness on the basis of deeper knowledge and training. To ensure that the public, businesses, academia and partners understand our approach, and have the right guidance to help them make safe decisions, we will bring together existing guidance on China in a new gov.uk hub and continue to develop comprehensive guidance relevant to engagement with China.”
No policy recommendations. Nothing to address the united front political strategy, nothing on strategic dependencies, nothing on our exposure to escalation in the Taiwan Strait, or any other pressing issues. In other words a complete flub…
Lammy’s excuse for not publishing the audit is “national security.” At the same time the foreign secretary said freezing relations with China is “not an option” – “China has delivered a third of the global economic growth, becoming the world’s second largest economy. Altogether with Hong Kong, the UK’s largest trading partner. And not engaging with China is therefore no choice at all. China’s power is an inescapable fact.” Surrender…
Luke de Pulford, human rights activist and executive director of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China, tells Guido:
“This was the sole commitment on China in the labour manifesto. After long delays and expectation management, we now learn there’s barely any policy in it, and they’re not even publishing the thing.”
The Chinese mega-embassy will be signed off by Rayner shortly. Golden Keir-a in full grip now…
