Hunter Biden’s Former Lawyers Demand Payment, File Lawsuit

Hunter Biden is facing a lawsuit from the law firm that represented him in multiple federal legal matters, including his recent felony gun trial in Delaware, as reported by The New York Post.

The firm, Winston & Strawn LLP, alleges that President Biden’s son owes them “substantially in excess of $50,000” in unpaid legal fees and interest, according to court documents filed Monday in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

“This is a breach of contract action against Mr. Biden for unpaid legal fees,” the lawsuit states. The firm claims that despite multiple attempts to collect the outstanding balance, Hunter Biden has failed to pay the remaining amount due.

According to the filing, Hunter Biden, 55, retained the firm in December 2022 to represent him in “several complex matters,” including a criminal case in the United States District Court for the District of Delaware.

The firm’s services also extended to assisting Biden with congressional oversight issues, coordination with other legal teams and advisors, and guidance during the Department of Justice’s investigations.

The complaint includes a copy of the engagement letter signed by Hunter Biden on December 23, 2022. In it, the scope of work was outlined, including legal support involving both federal prosecution and congressional scrutiny.

The lawsuit specifies that while “a portion of those fees have been paid,” the remaining balance exceeds $50,000, factoring in unpaid invoices and interest accrued.

“Despite repeated requests for payment, Mr. Biden has failed to pay the amounts he owes,” the complaint reads. “This action is brought to enforce [Winston & Strawn’s] contract rights against Mr. Biden through judgment for the amount due, and lien on all Mr. Biden’s assets.”

The filing notes that Hunter’s lead attorney at the time, Abbe Lowell, was billing at an hourly rate of $1,510. Other attorneys and staff working on Biden’s legal matters were charging between $230 and $1,945 per hour.

Lowell has since departed from Winston & Strawn and did not respond to a request for comment.

The firm said that legal services were actively provided from March 2023 through October 2024, and that Hunter Biden never raised objections to any of the invoices issued.

“As of April 30, 2025, the outstanding amount due, when factoring in invoiced amounts and interest, is substantially in excess of $50,000,” the firm stated.

An initial hearing in the case has been scheduled for September 19.

The lawsuit follows revelations during the congressional impeachment inquiry into former President Joe Biden that Hunter’s close associate, Kevin Morris—nicknamed his “sugar brother”—had been covering various legal costs on his behalf.

In May 2024, just weeks before Hunter’s felony gun trial began, Morris reportedly told associates he was “completely tapped out” due to mounting expenses.

Hunter Biden was later convicted on three felony counts in the Delaware gun case and pleaded guilty in a separate California tax evasion case. He was pardoned by his father in December 2024, shortly before former President Joe Biden left office.
