Jasmine Crockett Bows Out of Oversight Committee Run After Losing Democrat Support

Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, has officially withdrawn her bid to become the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, a panel currently central to investigations concerning former President Joe Biden’s mental fitness, as reported by Fox News.

Crockett, who has frequently made headlines during committee hearings, cited lack of support from colleagues as the reason behind her decision.

Crockett spoke to reporters Tuesday following the Democrats’ weekly closed-door caucus meeting.

“It was clear by the numbers that my style of leadership is not exactly what they were looking for. I didn’t think it was fair for me to then push forward and try to rebuke that.”

The Texas Democrat had been competing to become the ranking member—the most senior Democrat on the committee—but lost an earlier vote Monday evening conducted by a smaller group of senior House Democrats.

That vote selected Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., as the party’s nominee. Crockett later confirmed she placed last in a field of four candidates.

“They were clear that I was the one that made the least sense in their minds. I accept that, and I think that you have to make sure that you are going to be able to work with leadership if you are going to go into a leadership position.”

Despite the setback, Crockett vowed to remain engaged in her role on the committee. “I don’t want to be an impediment,” she added. “But I will still be loud and proud, and I’ll be a team player.”

The House Oversight Committee, chaired by Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., has played a prominent role in high-profile investigations in recent sessions of Congress.

The panel led efforts during the Biden impeachment inquiry and is currently investigating claims that White House aides may have concealed evidence of cognitive decline in the then-president.

Beyond these inquiries, the committee is responsible for oversight of the federal workforce and management of government-owned properties—issues that remain important as President Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers focus on reducing the size and scope of the federal government.

Crockett, who gained notoriety last year after a televised verbal clash with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., over personal remarks during a hearing, had pitched herself to Democratic colleagues as a strong communicator capable of defending the party’s values during hearings.

In a letter to colleagues earlier this month, Crockett wrote, “Our work cannot be solely reactive. We must also be strategic in laying the groundwork to win back the House majority.”

The committee’s previous ranking member, Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., passed away last month following a battle with esophageal cancer, leaving the leadership role vacant until this week’s selection of Garcia.
