EU threatens Irish government over failure to enforce European ‘hate speech’ laws

The European Union has warned the Irish government it must enforce controversial ‘hate speech’ laws or face the consequences.

But free speech advocates in Ireland say the EU laws are too widely written and they could criminalise ordinary people, including Christians, who voice their opinions on social issues.

The EU has given the Republic of Ireland two months from 7 May to enforce the laws, or face legal action in the European Court of Justice.

In the European Parliament, Irish MEP Michael McNamara asked the Commission to back down, calling the efforts ‘fundamentally misguided’.
