Democratic strategist James Carville suggested on a Thursday podcast that President Donald Trump bombed Iran in order to help get his “big, beautiful bill” passed.
Trump has long argued that Iran must never obtain a nuclear weapon and on Saturday he ordered the bombings of three Iranian nuclear sites based on his belief that they were fast approaching acquiring one. When a “Politics War Room” listener asked Carville whether he thought it was “possible” the president chose to strike Iran “as part of a real estate deal with the Saudi royal family,” the Democratic strategist said he believed it was — but said the real reason was likely to persuade Republicans to pass his major legislation.

“I think the ‘big, beautiful bill’ is in some kind of trouble. And I am not part of … ‘They always get it. Clinton got it, Reagan got it, Obama got it, Biden got it, Bush got it.’ It’s all true. This one is increasingly difficult,” Carville said. “And I think Trump knows that. And Trump knows that Virginia and New Jersey are coming. You have never convinced me there was not a political motivation that pushed him over the top on this decision. And I think it backfired. I think it backfired. But Trump — the one thing he does have — he has primitive survival skills, alright? If he sees something, he’ll try to alter it.”
“And I think he saw the polling on this is bad. It’s getting worse. It is going to get really bad. The more this thing sits out there, the more it stinks,” he continued. “And they got some problems … smart money would always bet that in the end they get it through. And I think Trump strategically did this so he could say to a Republican: ‘Your president is at war and you have an obligation to stand with him. And we can fix all this stuff later.’ The bargain’s powerful. He knows he’s in trouble. I think this thing is actually in trouble.”
Trump announced on Monday that Israel and Iran had reached a ceasefire two days following the attack. Vice President JD Vance also asserted on “Special Report with Bret Baier” Monday that Iran had been “very close” to constructing a nuclear weapon prior to the Trump administration striking their sites.
Trump has demanded that the “big, beautiful bill,” which consists of broad swaths of his legislative agenda, reach his desk by July 4, but it is presently uncertain whether Congress will meet that deadline.
