Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani has secured the Democratic nomination for mayor of New York City, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo following his concession Tuesday night.

The race concluded with Mamdani’s strong performance in wealthier voting districts and higher-income neighborhoods, according to data released after polls closed.

The victory immediately sparked criticism over the ideological shift among New York City’s liberal base.

During an interview on The Megyn Kelly Show Thursday, “Ruthless” podcast co-host Comfortably Smug pointed to what he described as the “white guilt” driving progressive voters’ support for Mamdani.

“If you look at the breakdown of where he won, Mamdani won, in New York City, upper middle class and wealthy people came out in droves to vote for him,” Comfortably Smug said.

“So this deranged kind of white guilt, which just gripped the progressive movement of thinking that ‘Well, white people are evil. Capitalism is evil, even though I have a place in the Upper East Side, capitalism is a horrible system. Doesn’t work for people even though, you know, from Park Ave[nue] I go shopping on Madison every day. It’s a wonderful system for me.’”

According to The New York Times’ projections, Mamdani led Cuomo by approximately 10 points among middle-income voters and by 13 points among higher-income voters.

In contrast, Cuomo won the support of lower-income voters by roughly 13 points.

The demographic breakdown further showed Mamdani leading among white voters by about five points, Hispanic voters by six points, and Asian voters by 15 points.

Cuomo maintained a strong advantage among Black voters, leading Mamdani by 18 points.

Comfortably Smug commented further on the city’s political shift, saying, “But I think we need a communist. They’re gonna get what they deserve. For so many folks — yourself included — who no longer live in New York, don’t have a place in there, you see what they’ve done. It just keeps getting worse and worse and worse.”

Fellow “Ruthless” co-host Josh Holmes added, “It really whittled down the old talent pool of candidates, right? We were basically down to a choice between a guy who killed your grandmother and a socialist psychopath or the current guy, which is like no bucket of fruit either.”

Following his nomination, Mamdani’s proposed policy agenda has drawn increased attention.

Among his priorities are raising New York City’s minimum wage to $30 per hour and implementing tax hikes on corporations and high-income earners.

According to his campaign estimates, the tax increases would generate approximately $10 billion annually to fund various government programs and services.

Mamdani has also taken a firm stance against federal immigration enforcement, opposing President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. As part of his platform, Mamdani has pledged to make New York City a “Trump-proof” sanctuary jurisdiction.

His proposal includes terminating cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and allocating over $160 million in city funds for immigration legal aid.

While Mamdani’s platform has energized progressive voters, it has raised concerns among others about the fiscal and public safety implications of his policies.

With the general election approaching, the focus is expected to intensify on how Mamdani’s agenda would reshape the nation’s largest city should he be elected mayor.
