Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced Monday that several major trade developments are expected within the next 48 hours, as President Donald Trump continues to press for high-quality agreements in ongoing international negotiations.
Appearing on CNBC, Bessent indicated that the White House is entering a pivotal stretch in its trade agenda.
“We are going to have several announcements in the next 48 hours,” Bessent stated.

The Trump administration has remained focused on negotiating favorable terms for the United States, with the President placing a clear emphasis on substance over speed.
“And Joe, I think what President Trump is concerned about is the quality of the deals, not the quantity,” Bessent said, referring to CNBC host Joe Kernen.
Bessent explained that the President is working to finalize a series of trade agreements that have involved considerable coordination with international partners.
“As you could imagine as he started herding the cats and trying to get everyone across the finish line, when he said that there’s a chance that countries could boomerang back to their April 2, reciprocal tariff levels,” he said.

That warning appears to have had an impact on negotiations. Bessent noted that the possibility of countries reverting to their previous tariff positions had led to a noticeable uptick in activity from foreign governments.
“We’ve had a lot of people change their tune in terms of negotiations,” Bessent added.
In fact, Bessent pointed to a flurry of new offers being submitted to the Treasury Department.
“So my mailbox was full last night with a lot of new offers, a lot of new proposals,” he said.
Bessent confirmed that the coming days will be busy as officials work to sort through the flood of incoming proposals.
“So it’s going to be a busy couple of days,” he said.
Importantly, Bessent emphasized that President Trump has assured foreign governments that any reversion to prior reciprocal tariff levels would not occur immediately.
“But importantly too that President Trump has said that they would — the countries would not go back to the reciprocal rate until August 1,” he stated.

The announcement sets the stage for a series of trade updates from the administration, as negotiators work to secure final commitments from partner nations.
Bessent’s remarks underscore the administration’s approach of leveraging deadlines and targeted pressure to bring about concessions, while holding firm on the importance of securing deals that benefit American industry and workers.
Further details on the upcoming announcements are expected to be released within the next two days.
