The party political operation is blatantly blaming the scandal and cover-up on the Tories who were in power in December 2023 when the Afghan Response Route was set up and an initial injunction sought by Ben Wallace. Labour is now running Instagram posts captioned: “Watch this: Defence Secretary explains Afghan data leak that happened under Tories.” Starmer kicked off PMQs by discussing the scheme and Labour’s decision to lift the super-injunction while Badenoch avoided the issue…
At the post-PMQs huddle Starmer’s spokesman took a more careful line: “The Prime Minister is angry such a serious breach was allowed to happen.” There was no ruling out a public inquiry. A LOTO spokesman hit back by saying he was “not sure what inquiry would achieve” and questions on the scandal are “for those in previous government.” With Ben Wallace out in full defence of the decisions taken by the Tories in the last government Labour has taken a calculated political move to lift the legal block when they did and fire a salvo at the Tories.
