In a recent episode of her “IMO” podcast, Michelle Obama surprised listeners by welcoming a “very, very, very special guest”—her husband, former President Barack Obama.
The appearance seemed aimed at silencing the persistent rumors that the high-profile couple’s decades-long marriage is on the rocks.
But even with a public show of unity, many remain skeptical about the state of their relationship.

The podcast, co-hosted with Michelle’s brother Craig Robinson, began with a heavy dose of sarcasm and skepticism.
“Wait, you guys like each other?”
Robinson joked, setting the tone for what quickly turned into a half-serious defense of the Obamas’ marriage.

Michelle sighed about the ever-churning “rumor mill,” while Barack, 63, took a lighter approach. “She took me back! It was touch and go for a while,” he joked—though for some listeners, the attempt at humor only fueled more doubt.

Michelle, 61, quickly shot back, cautioning her husband not to “start,” before agreeing it was “nice to [be] in the same room.”
She went on to explain that their separate appearances have been enough to ignite speculation.
“When we aren’t, folks think we’re divorced.”

Attempting to squash the talk once and for all, Michelle insisted, “There hasn’t been one moment in our marriage where I have thought about quitting my man.”
She continued, “We’ve had some really hard times and we’ve had a lot of fun times, a lot of adventures, and I’ve become a better person because of the man I’m married to.”

Still, public appearances and carefully worded statements have done little to silence the whisper campaign that began in earnest earlier this year.

When Barack attended former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral and Donald Trump’s inauguration without Michelle by his side—events where every other living former First Lady made appearances—rumors hit a fever pitch.
Even political commentator Meghan McCain weighed in on the situation, lending credibility to the gossip.
Speaking on journalist Tara Palmeri’s podcast back in January, McCain revealed, “I have been hearing this rumor that the Obamas are getting a divorce by reputable people. I’m not talking about TMZ… I’m talking about very serious journalists telling me that they’re hearing the Obama divorce rumors are true.”

Palmeri didn’t dismiss the claims. “We’ve heard that for a long time,” she replied, adding, “Like I just heard that they live separate lives.”

Meanwhile, Michelle herself may have fanned the flames with her own words.
Since launching the “IMO” podcast four months ago, the former First Lady has repeatedly aired grievances about her husband. From airing minor annoyances to veiled criticisms, some observers believe she’s said more than she may realize.
Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson recently remarked, “Michelle really dislikes her husband, and it’s super obvious. I’m not just saying that to be catty. I think I’m trying to feel compassion for her but her hostility toward the guy is unbelievable.”
Megyn Kelly echoed that sentiment, observing, “Everything Michelle says about her husband is negative.”
Comparing it to her own marriage, Kelly added, “I almost never say negative things about Doug. He’s not perfect but when I think about him, I don’t immediately go to whatever is negative. I go to what’s positive and what I love about him.”

Back on the podcast, Michelle described how even strangers have approached her brother, Craig Robinson, to ask what’s going on with her marriage.
“That’s terrible,” she commented after hearing Robinson describe a recent interaction in which a woman asked him, “What did he do? … He did something, didn’t he?”
According to Robinson, once he assured the fan that the Obamas were still together, “she was so happy, you would have thought [I] gave her a Christmas gift.”

Barack, in his typical aloof fashion, shrugged off the speculation.
“These are the kinds of things I just miss. I don’t even know this stuff is going on and then somebody will mention it to me, and I’m like, ‘What are you talking about?’”
But for many, this detachment speaks volumes. While the Obamas put on a brave face and exchange compliments and jabs in equal measure, doubts remain.
Their attempts at humor, carefully crafted statements, and even podcast appearances haven’t done enough to convince skeptics.

After all, the signs are there—Michelle’s noticeable absences, repeated criticisms, and her own brother being questioned by concerned fans.
Whether the couple is just going through a rough patch or actively avoiding the spotlight while leading separate lives remains unclear.
One thing is certain: while Barack and Michelle can try to project unity all they want, the questions surrounding their marriage are not going away anytime soon.
And if history is any indicator, where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire.
