CBS News downplayed the significance of the Trump administration’s deportations of thousands of sex offenders and murderers in a Wednesday article.
“Despite vow to remove the worst offenders, ICE data shows less than 1% of deportees had murder convictions,” was the headline for Margaret Brennan’s piece. The article cited raw data the outlet obtained from an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) document.
Of the 70,583 convicted criminals that President Donald Trump’s ICE have deported since January, “Only 1.8% or 2,355 of the total convictions against those criminals had to do with sex offenses,” Brennan wrote.
CBS separated the number of criminal deportees with convictions for sex offenses from ones with convictions for sexual assault specifically. The latter number totaled 1,628. Combined, the total number of deportees with sexual assault or sex offense convictions was 3,983.
“The number of homicide convictions totaled just 729, or 0.58%, and the number of convicted kidnappers were 536, or 0.42%. About 10,738 convictions were for assault, or 8.5%,” Brennan wrote.

“It’s insane for any purportedly neutral journalist, let alone a network star, to opine that ‘just’ 729 convicted killers were deported in six months,” Emily Jashinsky, the Washington, D.C., correspondent for UnHerd and host of “After Party with Emily Jashinsky,” told the Daily Caller.

“Just about every American would agree that’s an enormous number in a very narrow category,” Jashinsky concluded.
