The Democratic Party is drawing mockery for accidentally shining a negative light on former President Joe Biden’s economy in an attempt to discredit President Donald Trump.
The party’s official X account posted a graphic showing drastic increases in grocery prices from 2021 to 2024 on Thursday night with the caption “Trump’s America,” even though Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris were in office at the time, an archive of the now-deleted post shows. The White House responded to the debacle on X by posting a version of the graphic with the years 2021 through 2024 labeled “Biden.”

The Democratic National Committee did not respond to a request for comment. Other X users, however, swiftly took the opportunity to highlight the Democrats’ messaging failure.
“Deleted but never forgotten,” conservative commentator Greg Price wrote.
“They didn’t send their best,” said another user.

Inflation in the U.S. reached its highest in 40 years under Biden in the summer of 2022, according to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), a widely accepted measure of inflation. Most voters ahead of the 2024 elections said that the economy was an “extremely” or “very important” issue for them, and voters widely expressed dissatisfaction with Biden’s economy, polling shows.
The CPI dropped to a four-year low under Trump in April. Manufacturing output, consumer sentiment, retail sales and other areas of the American economy fared well in June despite negative predictions about Trump’s tariffs on other countries.
Summer gas prices also hit a four-year low in June, according to the American Automobile Association. Energy experts have attributed positive price trends to Trump opening up domestic energy production after Biden worked to stymie America’s fossil fuel industry in the name of fighting climate change. Average gas prices in the U.S. hit multiple record highs under Biden, rising by 92% within the first two years of his term.
America’s CPI was projected to rise by 2.7% in June compared to the same time last year, accounting for the last six months of Biden’s term and the first six months of Trump’s.
“Prices are higher today than they were on July 2024 all in major categories listed below,” the graphic in the Democrats’ post said, listing dairy, meat, alcohol and other items.
The White House did not respond to a request for comment.
