Trump rails against ‘rigged’ job numbers, fires Biden appointee overseeing labor stats

The latest jobs report had one final revision after the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics was told to hit the bricks by the president over the allegedly “manipulated” numbers.

Friday, President Donald Trump applied the same no-nonsense approach he’d employed on national security and foreign policy as the July jobs report only showed an uptick of 73,000 for nonfarm jobs alongside a downward revision of the months prior. Responding to the purported “little” change in the employment numbers, the chief executive took swift action to fire the Biden-appointed BLS Commissioner Erika McEntarfer, asserting the numbers were “RIGGED” to make him “look bad.”

“I was just informed that our Country’s ‘Jobs Numbers’ are being produced by a Biden Appointee, Dr. Erika McEntarfer, the Commissioner of Labor Statistics, who faked the Jobs Numbers before the Election to try and boost Kamala’s chances of victory,” the president began a post on Truth Social.

Referencing repeated instances of overstating growth only to later revise, with figures as high as 818,000 under the Biden administration, Trump continued, “These were Records — No one can be that wrong? We need accurate Jobs Numbers. I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY. She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified. Important numbers like this must be fair and accurate, they can’t be manipulated for political purposes.”

“McEntarfer said there were only 73,000 Jobs added (a shock!) but, more importantly, that a major mistake was made by them, 258,000 Jobs downward, in the prior two months,” he went on before adding a dig at Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. “Similar things happened in the first part of the year, always to the negative. The Economy is BOOMING under ‘TRUMP’ despite a Fed that also plays games, this time with Interest Rates, where they lowered them twice, and substantially, just before the Presidential Election, I assume in the hopes of getting ‘Kamala’ elected — How did that work out?”

A followup post from the president added, “In my opinion, today’s Jobs Numbers were RIGGED in order to make the Republicans, and ME, look bad — Just like when they had three great days around the 2024 Presidential Election, and then, those numbers were ‘taken away’ on November 15, 2024, right after the Election, when the Jobs Numbers were massively revised DOWNWARD, making a correction of over 818,000 Jobs — A TOTAL SCAM. Jerome ‘Too Late’ Powell is no better! But, the good news is, our Country is doing GREAT!”

Additionally, when speaking with the press outside the White House Friday, Trump referenced the data from before his defeat of then-Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election as he said, “… the same kind of thing happened. And I think you’ll see some very interesting information come out. You have to have honest reports.”

In highlighting the immediate impact the data has, CNBC reported a drop in the Dow Jones Industrial Average of more than 500 points while the Nasdaq decreased 2%.

Still, Creative Planning Chief Investment Officer and President Peter Mallouk argued against the move to the outlet, expressing, “I can’t believe what I just saw.”

“This is not healthy,” he said. “We can’t have a set of numbers come out and fire somebody that served under numerous administrations in various roles because you don’t like the numbers.”

Opinions of that sort were readily batted down by the administration as statements highlighted the repeated issues from the BLS, including a post from Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer in agreement with the president as she noted, “A recent string of major revisions have come to light and raised concerns about decisions being made by the Biden-appointed Labor Commissioner,” as she indicated Deputy Commissioner William Wiatrowski would serve as acting commissioner.

Likewise, Deputy White House Chief of Staff Taylor Budowich reacted to a report from Axios referring to revisions as “normal and expected” and that the downward revision was the reason for McEntarfer’s termination by asserting, “Wrong. She was fired after consistently getting it WRONG. You don’t get to be this bad at your job and keep it.”

He went on to point out, “Policy makers look to these reports to inform decisions (like rate cuts by the fed). We need accuracy, and President Trump will restore competency and accuracy to this critical agency.”
