Labour is replacing guidance to the EC that was issued first by the Tories in 2022 in the Elections Bill…

Labour says it’s designating “a new strategy and policy statement for the Electoral Commission.” Chalmers complains:

“It is inappropriate for the government of the day to seek to guide the work of the independent electoral commission… This is a matter we raised with the previous government and continue to believe is an important point of principle.”

Back when the government guidance was first proposed in 2022 Labour railed against it. Baroness Hayman argued it set “a dangerous precedent” – echoed by David Blunkett who led a media campaign against the changes. Labour’s amnesia of opposition really setting in now…
